Wow! You start thinking about it and just aren't sure where to start commenting. Any subsystem is impressive...all the parts together is....wow!

He needs to add a final stage that mounts the PowerUp motor module to the planes...

He could add an erco feature and set it on fire before it launches!

<$1000 CNC kit available on ebay, can be used to manufacture REAL guns, but I don't see any craze for it. 3D printers (in terms how most people understand them, I don't meant multi million $ industrial models )were rubbish, are rubbish, and will be rubbish, until laser metal deposition or whatsoever it's called capable 3d printers will cost less than $200. And this is unlikely to happen in observable future, same as we don't see high capacity batteries or high efficiency solar cells.

Sooner or later this will be a safety issue. The technology is out there and people will do this whether it's legal or not. I think it would be better to have a system where people can legally do this using proven designs rather than having the current wild west of tinkering. Sooner or later someone is going to be injured or killed by one these things.

While these are valid concerns, they are not directly related to the Original Post. Please keep it on topic.

    Having fun with Paper Airplanes!

There's a < $1000 kit out there that can mill steel?

The only decent sub $1000 kit I know of is the ShapeOko, and it's not designed for tougher than soft aluminium.
(One user reports being able to mill Stainless Steel, by moving very slowly and wasting bits at a horrendous rate, though)

What you can machine, actually is more dependent on cutting tool selection. Using very low feed rates and sharp tools, you can do anything with anything. My EGX-350 is for aluminum and brass only, but by using good bits and slow feed rate, I have machined several parts from stainless steel even.

Great idea for a paper airplane launcher. He should definitely add a flamethrower though...
