    ... and Linux is not even an OS. It's just a kernel, right Heater? So any comparison of Windows with Linux is like comparing apples with oranges.

    What a bunch of B.S. (I don't mean Basic Stamp) - you bash Windows and Microsoft at every opportunity!

    If Windows is so insignificant in your mind, why don't you ignore threads pertaining to Windows instead of instigating controversy with posts like these??

    What does it take to get you guys off of expensive, closed source, single supplier, proprietary, dead end operating systems?

    ctwardell,

    Can't really blame them for that.

    Exactly. That is the trap that appals us so much.

    "suspects", "bashing", you make it sound like what we are saying is a bad thing.

    To be clear this is really not anything to do with bashing MS. Although that does get my full support as well.

    No, it's all about the crazy situation of dependency we find ourselves in. I find it incredible that we ever allowed a huge proportion of the worlds business, governmental and other infrastructure to become dependent on a single supplier in a foreign country over which we have no control.

    The same arguments would apply to dependency on an Apple or a Google or whoever.

    Seems this does not bother you. It has increasingly bothered me for decades already.

    Derailing this thread sligthly...

    http://sabrina-online.com/strips/SabOnline20.GIF

    "Almost as much Microsoft bashing as a Windows developers' conference"....

    Microsoft has actually done a few good things, too.

    For one, they created the HPFS file system still used in OS/2.
    (It's even supported automatically in WinNT up to 3.51)

    Wait a minute Ron. What is going on here? First you insult me for "MS bashing" then you quote my posts where I don't do any MS bashing. On top of that you highlight in red where I emphasis what my statements are really about.

    Clearly I don't express myself well enough to make myself understood to you.

    Certainly MS and Windows is not insignificant me or to anybody involved with computers. It has effects through out the industry. From forcing the standardization of broken features in JavaScript all those years ago. To closed file formats and file systems to the wrong kind of slash in file path separators and the wrong line termination in text files to a million other annoyances that you cannot get away from no matter how hard you try.

    @erco

    Is it wise to be voting up posts that insult other forum members? Especially when they are wrong?

    @all

    How come people are so violently supportive of a mega corporation that just wants to lock them in and suck money out of them? To the point of throwing abuse at anyone who suggests there may be issues with that situation.

    No that is not an MS bash in particular. That is what large corporations do. I'm just curious how it inspires such loyalty.

    (We got our users over on WinNT4.0 as soon as we could. Skipped Win95/98/me on clients)

    Windows based on Linux?
    Wine?

    I seem to recall that Windows 3.1 had a very brilliant feature. You could put your application as an icon onto the desk top. But that icon was actually a miniature window in which you app was still running. I don't remember how one did that but I did get my 3D renderer experiments to do it.

    I have never seen an OS do that since.

    Just my opinion, but I've never really considered Heater's posts to be specifically "Microsoft or Windows bashing", though there are others here that are guilty. I'm probably one of them. I'm a mostly Windows user myself and rarely does a day go by that I don't get ticked of at something about either Windows or Microsoft.

    I don't think of Heater as a Windows basher. He's more of a Microsoft basher, or more specifically a any-company-that-makes-money-from-software basher.

    I do not have problems using Windows 7. I think Win7 will be around for a while like XP was because people take a while to get used to change. I still have a Debian Linux drive set to boot if the Windows drive fails. Using the Raspberry Pi has let me see

    using Linux is not hard. I mainly use Windows on my main system but more and more I am looking at the free route.

    Sadly you don't get my position either. Check my statements conveniently reproduced and highlighted above by Ron. It's certainly nothing to do with making money out of software.

    I think you've made yourself perfectly clear.

    No matter how you try to couch comments, you think Microsoft sucks and anyone who uses their software must be a dimwit.

    You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but, I for one (and obviously some others), get tired of your repeated harangue about the evils of MS and it's "flawed" operating system.

    Again, why don't you just ignore threads that pertain to Windows instead of stirring the pot??

    Ron,

    Please quote me where I have said anything resembling "Microsoft sucks and anyone who uses their software must be a dimwit."

    Certainly I have never said anything about the users. Obviously a lot of people, dim or bright or genius, just want to get something done. And they do it the best way they know how. The OS or other software they use is not the thing they want to think about most.

    My repeated "
    harangue", if you want to call it that, is not about MS or it's operating systems as such.

    Why don't I ignore
    threads that pertain to Windows ?

    Because it has a big impact on all our lives. The "pot" need stirring.

    I repeat my question. Why are people, and I mean you, so violently defensive of a huge corporation and the status quo?

    It's not like I questioned your mothers morals or such.

    Don't get me wrong, I currently use win 7 and have few problems but there are some. Microsoft really dosent get what people like us want. They seam to only think people use computers for Facebook etc. and social media and videos. Used Mint for awhile liked it but had issues more then with win 7 and switched back to win 7. I like it but it is kinda bloated. It could use a better consol interface.

    This is all I have to say about this...:blank:

    KMyres,

    I think you have a point there.

    Servers do not use Windows, nor does scientific computing, super computers, embedded systems, high end graphics or telephones. And so on.

    The problem that MS faces is that everyone can do their "Facebook etc. and social media and videos" on many other systems. From Android and iOS phones and tabs to Chrome books, and so on.

    Anecdotally, in this household naive computer users can do their banking, Facebook,
    FarmVille, email, TV watching, etc on Windows XP or Windows 7 or Debian. They neither know nor care what is underneath.

    Have you noticed how Parallax has been pushing for solutions for Prop programming tools that work on a variety of other systems?

    Perhaps Microsoft should just abandon the whole Windows identity and move on to something more in tune with the times.

    How about the "Microsoft's new OS, The Anywhere Door"?

    If you are unaware of what an Anywhere Door is, go here +++> http://doraemon.wikia.com/wiki/Anywhere_Door

    i suspect that Microsoft could even partner with Doreamon and use the earless blue robotic cat with his magic pocket to attract a whole new following that Windows 10 would never achieve.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Of course, this skipping Windows 9 might lead to all sorts of skipping -- like skipping Microsoft completely.
    Apparently it has no impact on Linux users' blissful lives.
    If you must stir, why not find a more appropriate pot? Griping on a Parallax forum ain't gonna change anybody's mind at Microsoft. If you want to take up the mantle and make a difference, find a Windows forum and suggest some positive changes there with more constructive comments. As ever, you'll catch more flies with sugar than vinegar. It doesn't pay to be a hater, Heater.
    Oh Dave, you are really messing with the recursive quoting there.
    "Microsoft sucks and anyone who uses their software must be a dimwit."
    I just cut and pasted that from your post. Can I now claim that you said "Microsoft sucks and anyone who uses their software must be a dimwit"
    :)
    Instead of bashing MS for making sucky SW can we get back to the real issue there?
    Making fun of them for suddenly deciding to change the name of the next OS version without a really good reason...
