I formatted and installed win 7 into the second 500gig HD. Win 7 was pretty broken so therefore the new install. I did it to use visual studio and C# ans ASP.Net.

All was good for nearly a whole day, but then i decided to download a graphing calculator fro tucows. The calculator sucks and now I have the most incredible number of ads showing up on every page now. Even the web pages I write myself, as soon as I run them they have adds throughout them. I have only MS essentials virus program.

Things are getting worse in my opinion in the windows world. I'll search for an add blocker or free malware program but if anyone can offer a program and site thats free please , be my guest !

Without more info, I'm guessing you got an add-on/toolbar installed to your browser (I'm assuming IE). You can:
    1) Disable Add-ons
    2) Look at your installed programs (sort by date) and see what else you may have installed.
    3) System Restore can take you back to a time before the calc install.

MS Essentials are good for what it does, but BitDefender and MalwareBytes are still my tools of choice.

For a calculator, have you seen GraphCalc?

I had the same problem with adds a couple of weeks ago. I must have clicked on something I should not have. No free software that it tried worked to get rid of them.

A System Restore from two weeks prior did the trick.

It didn't work for me after the fact. Does is do better in preventing the installation of the offending mal/addware?

I also use the free version of CCleaner. Make sure you look at the options along the way during installing free stuff to make sure you only install the program you are looking for.

You are right of course. I was probably in a hurry to install some software to try out. I will be careful next time. :)

Agree'd on the calculator.. It does actually suck.. I've been installing Wine, then moving a copy of calc.exe from my WindowsXP boxes.
The first order of business is to install an "Ad Blocker" on the Firefox web browser after install. It's not a fault in the OS, but the Internet itself has become very noisy.

Mono develop startsw to load then ...nothing. so now im installing mono complete a sepatqate install. Maybe i need both for any of it to work ?

I installed KCALC, it does not seem to be of any extra benifit than the calculator, sure itsw got msome extra interesting conversions but i could easily use either.

edit: i prefer the default calc, imho its better tham kcalc,

OK, I installed both Mono Develop and Mono Complete, now its working pretty much like visual Studio. its a little late(3:50am) to keep trying it out. Tomorrow, well in a few hours sleep I'll try and use C# and ASP.Net to build some web pages.

In win 7 I used ILLS or is it IILS, whatever to use my pc as a web server. not sure steps i need to take with mint, mabe xampp, but I dont think thats for ASP pages.

    [edit] i'll try XSP

If anyone is doing C# or ASP.Net web pages using Mono i;d lie to hear from you. I have not had any trouble with the C# part but i am having problems with the coding of web pages using Mono. I think I have got the correct PC server, Apache from Downloads and, xsp and mod_mono. I cant seem to find a way to add in a designer page like MS vidual studio has. ????

Mike, Malwarebytes and CCCleaner are both good and I would also suggest you use Spybot and AVG-Free. You should also consider a Firewall such as ZoneAlarm but only use the firewall version. AVG also has a very nice Rescue CD that you can download in case your computer gets really messed up.

Let me know if you need any download links because sometimes they are hard to find.

Funny that you say that because a friend of mine just told me today that his computer is acting up. I have a feeling he has all kinds of Spyware and Adware on it.

SpyBot S&D is a good free one also. Coupled with the other free ones mentioned and you are covered pretty well. However, nothing beats using a paid version of one of the major AV programs. I use and resell CA and I like it as it runs in the background, does it's job and does not bug you. I have noticed lately that even some paid software programs try adding Ask and Google toolbar and others. The so called "free" software tries to throw a curveball at ya. They have a list of programs to install one at a time. It almost looks as though if you select cancel you will not be able to install the software you are trying to install. Some people click on Accept through several of these and end up with a huge mess on their hands. Simply selecting cancel for each of them will eventually install the software you originally wanted.

Sometimes I wonder what you people are doing that causes you to have all these problems. On my Windows computers all that's used is the basic stuff included with Windows, mostly because it's easier than turning it off. The internet is accessed with FirefoxESR running NoScript and Ghostery, along with a comprehensive hosts file. I haven't had any malware or virus problems in years. The last problem I remember having was probably in 2003 or 2004.

What they are doing is causally downloading and installing any old executables they find on the net and then wondering why their computer is hosed.

Given that we got the first DOS virus back in the 1980's and have experienced an avalanche of malware ever since it's amazing that people have not learned to not do that.

    Remember folks "Practice safer software".

And test new software in a VM... and rollback after the test.
The problem is the amount of noise out there and why do we need installers for software again ? they are not needed, they just put files all over the place :(. Criticize Apple all you want but moving a folder to the Applications folder is much better that all those installers...

Well for my system (WIN 7) Malwarebytes. does seem to have done the trick fror me. I was really infested with ads but now I only have to deal with one or two at certain points. It really is no longer a problem.

As for Mono and ASP.NET, Im r4eally just learning C# as its one of the modules/subjects I have to to take next year. I just spent the last two weeks learning as much about chemistry as i could, the model for Valence electrons, the types of bonding of the elements to form compounds, atomic weights vs atomic mass (thatwas interesting)My weight on the moon would be about 30kg, whereas my mass is still my mass ! I got into trouble when the "staff" found me still studying at after 2am. I beat them, i would go into my rooms toilet with the breakfast desk and sit there playing with Avogadro's number :)

There must be some dependencies for Mono that I have yet to find. But at least I got the Apache web server with the mono asp installed. I was happy just to be able to do that. I'm back in windows at the moment doing more C#/ASP

yes too true. I downloaded a calculater(rthat wasn't much good) from a site I should have been wary off, and this is the result.
    malwarepic.jpg

the main problem now is that i get this popup literally every 3 seconds. Ive gfone and deleted MyOSProtect.exe three times but it will not delete. Goes through all the correct motions but its still there after deletion. Roll back now i think.

Ive got Web Developer working fine now. can use 2010 (i'll remove ) or 2013 ;-)

Mike, Toolbars can cause all kinds of issues so avoid them like the plague but some sites have pop-ups and other annoying ads. Uninstall any toolbar.
I find that Malwarebytes doesn't find spyware and adware as good as SpyBot - Search and Destroy, though it's very good at finding nasty infections.

I hope you are aware that the free version of Malwarebytes doesn't automatically update or scan. That's why I recommended AVG.
Malwarebytes is good at finding those little bits that others will miss.

With ZoneAlarm you can deny internet access to any program that you don't know what it is. That will often stop the ads and random pop-ups.

Next time, ask about a program you see on the internet before downloading it.

Thanks, I'll get that AVG and I will not download in the future especially from the common download sites that always cause at least a bit of trouble. it should be illegal
some of the stunts they pull .

You also need a Firewall and an Anti-Spyware/Adware program. ZoneAlarm is a good free firewall, and SpyBot is great free spyware/adware program.

A couple other things to check. See if there are any files in the Windows\Temp directory. If there is, delete all of them. There should only be one file that will not delete. If you go in to Safe mode it should also delete. The next thing to check is Task Scheduler. I have seen Malware that sets itself up to start at specific times, usually to go to a web site and download files, etc.
