I've never claimed to be particularly good at anything except controlling blinky lights, and here's the latest version of that.
This display was built by Alliance Studio (Steve Wang) for Riot Games -- gamers will recognize the characters Annie and Tibbers from "League of Legends." The second image shows the amazing crew that worked on the display (this list of movies these people have worked on is incredible).
Lighting animation is controlled by a single EFX-TEK HC-8+ controller. I configured it as a DMX master. There are about five animation cogs that cover the various aspects of the display; each of them writes data into the DMX buffer which is sent out every 5ms (faster than normal for smooth fades). Cheap, off-the-shelf DMX "bricks" are used for outputs to about a five hundred 2W and 3W LEDs. Smoke is simulated using an industrial ultrasonic vaporizer.
When a marketing manager came in to see the finished display she started crying. That was cool.
This in on display at PAX West in Seattle this weekend.

I must find out more about the industrial ultrasonic vaporizers. Have been looking at hacking the small "e-cigs" but they're not that easy, and you need many.

That crew and warehouse looks the same when I am working in Nashville on projects. Takes a variety of individuals to do a one-off project like this.
Here they are again with their names below (back to front). I've added links to their IMDb pages -- these are unsung heroes who get their names in the credits, but few see because they walk out of the theater as soon as the movie ends.
Eddie Yang, Matt Rose, Cleve Gunderman, Robert Ramos, Michael Del Rossa
Jurgen Heimann, Otto Marlow III, Thom Floutz, Noreen Mason, Jon McPhalen, Justin McFarland, Michael Deak, Dragan Radic
Kazuyuki Okada, Brian Wade
TJ Loza, Aina Skinnes O'Kane, Steve Wang, Tianna Atwood, Laura Palazzolo, Heidi Mistic, Miyo Nakamura, Denise Leibee-Baer
