Does anyone have any experience with the XYZprinting da Vinci 1.0 FFF 3D printer? I've been thinking about getting a 3D printer and this one is only $499. I assume there are tradeoffs buying such an inexpensive printer but is this printer useful? I'd like to be able to print things like enclosures for electronics projects. Would this printer be up to the job or do I need something better?

The thing I don't like about the da Vinci is that you can't use off-the-shelf material, you are forced to buy their cartridges.

I have a printrbot jr and I'm happy with it.

If I was looking to buy now, I would consider the Printrbot Simple Metal Kit. $539 6"x6"x6" PLA only.

No experience, but note that da Vinci 2.0 is available for preorder e.g. through Amazon.
Personally I'm waiting for the 2.1 to become available in Europe as I'd prefer WiFi to be able to locate the printer where it is least in the way.
There are people that have found ways to refill the cartridges but that probably voids the warranty.

My buddy is a 3d printer whiz. He has 4 already, including an xyz Da Vinci. He likes it and recommends it highly if you're a tinkerer and don't mind some fiddling for best results. But he's about to buy another one, which he is all excited about, a Chinabot, around $750 IIRC. He lives far from me, but I'm going to check out his setup next week. Will inquire further.

Good grief. Has the world of photo printers come to 3D printing already? Sell the printer really cheaply and gouge your customers on the refills?

    That was quick.

Picked one up at Micro Center about 3 weeks ago. Got it up and running pretty quickly.

As far as the cartridge filament it has already been hacked. One way is a cartridge restter that writes to the eeprom to fool it. The other is pretty much a swap out of the printer software.

It only does ABS but some have gotten it to do PLA with a bit of additional cooling. ABS likes it to be hot (there is a glass hotbed) and PLA like to be cooled as it comes out of the nozzle.

The 2.0 has the 2 extruders with the same mechanical of the 1.0 so some printing area is lost.

Someone who has gotten the 2.0 has reported some issues with it. On mine you can see that there is a provision for the 2nd extruder.

Overall I like it and when the warranty expires I will do some of the mods that others have done.

Voltivo if one place to find out about it and also Soliforum.

I recommend building one from parts, it takes a bit more effort, but when something goes wrong, you know what it is an how to fix it. Store bought units are still too finicky.

I built a Prusa for $600 2 years ago, and a Wallace 1 year ago for $400. I think you should be able to do a Mendel90 for that or less. Also, we can buy pre built electronic boards, hot ends, and extruders, save a BUNCH of time and effort on the tricky bits.

What about building one from a kit like Bean suggested earlier? He mentioned the Printrbot Simple Metal Kit. I looked it up and it looks pretty sturdy.

Sal got the printrbot (non metal) and says its perfectly fine. He feels its a bit wobbly at high Z values but one could always add a stabilization if required (Sal hasn't as far as I know.)

And, the printrbot is more than sufficent to print parts for a second printer, it you fine you need something bigger or sturdier.

In my case, I started with the Prusa, and helped a kid build a wallace (generic printrbot) and now I working towards a Mendel90 for ABS, as it is easy to build an enclosure.

I havent used printrbot metal, but it sound fairly kick@$$ for the money. Also if bean recommends it I doubt you can go wrong.
