Parallax Quadrature Encoder question

Using the Parallax quadrature encoder (http://www.parallax.com/product/29321), on a single encoder, do both A and B need to be powered in order to read one of the inputs? For example, if you have Red, Black and White wired and powered but do not have the other side Red, Black, White wired will you get any data?

It's hard to tell because there is no schematic available on the product page.

Why not just hook it up an try it? Can't do any harm.

If you have a multimeter, I suggest checking to see if both ground pins are connected together and if both power pins are connected.together. My guess is both these connections are made.

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get data from a single channel.

No schematic? I'll see that we post it by the weekend on the product page.

Hi pearsoe - Welcome to the Forums!

You do not need to connect both sets of power pins - they are redundant. The only real reason why they're configured that way is because we supply the 3-wire jumper cables, so it's convenient to get the signals and power to and from a three pin header on a Board of Educationor Prop Activity Board(as examples).

We'll get a schematic up there pronto :)

    Thanks!

Thanks Ken and Matt. You're quick on the draw.
