FAA has banned all flight travel under 3,000 feet over Ferguson, MO (where riots are)

I thought this was a pretty interesting development in how important quadcopters with cameras have become that the police would actually get the FAA to issue a ban on all flights under 3,000 feet. The reason stated is "To provide a safe environment for law enforcement activities." Or is the ban only against News helicopters? Either way, I don't think I would want to be on the receiving end of their "activities."

I'm sure the rioters/protesters could use the chopters to avoid the police and it would be a PR disaster to show the police "activities."

Ha Ha :) let me post 8 cat pictures. :)

I've just been amazed as how quickly quadcopters (or model planes) with a camera have gone from a joke to "respect."

They must be more powerful than the force! :)

Call it political if yo like but...

If you are in the business of riot control what you want to know where everyone is. What you don't want "them" to know is where you are. (Same of course applies to all theaters of conflict).

Ergo, the possibility that someone with a plane or quadcopter is taking pictures from over your head and posting them all over the net such that your opponent can get updates on your forces positions minute by minute on their smart phones is something you have to thwart.

There's also the fact that there will be low-flying helis in the area, and the pilots really, REALLY doesn't want to dodge flying rubbish...

    Rocking Rubbish?
    Drone Dumpsters?
    Trebuchet Trash?
    Alliterative Litter?

Inspiration strikes. Not trying to be insensitive to the Ferguson families or others in the show me state.
