Perseid meteor shower tonight

Google's home page has a nice reminder* that tonight is the Perseid meteor shower. The recent "supermoon" won't be helpful in viewing but in the past the Perseids have been known for some spectacular displays. I have seen them travel nearly horizon to horizon with trails that persist for several seconds. Aside from a daytime meteor I once saw, nothing else compares. Viewing should be best after midnight.

*The graphic isn't quite right. Meteors from a named shower will all appear to come from the same place. In the case of the Perseids they will all appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus. Google's graphic shows random meteors.

Here's another example of the "Perversity of Nature". Here in Oregon's Willamette valley we have overcast, thunderstorms, partly cloudy all in our weather forcast. So much for meteor watching.... :(

Driving to/from a customer in Bend, OR last week gave me a good look at Shasta lake - scary low.
