A Russian crime ring has amassed the largest known collection of stolen Internet credentials, including 1.2 billion username and password combinations and more than 500 million email addresses, security researchers say.
The records, discovered by Hold Security, a firm in Milwaukee, include confidential material gathered from 420,000 websites, ranging from household names to small Internet sites. Hold Security has a history of uncovering significant hacks, including the theft last year of tens of millions of records from Adobe Systems.

D'oh. How did you guess my password so easily?
Sounds like a lot, but they are all the same!
What goes around comes around...
I was thinking the exact same thing... Ok so they have everyone's password..
The link you posted causes a new post on the forums.
SORRY!!!
I fixed the link...
You have a nation that rather prosecute a band ( the pussy cat riots ) then go after people whom are gonna be the largest threat to there economy .
Simply put .....
If this continues people here are gonna distance them selves from russia and the Well-off there are gonna suffer .
The super rich in Russia are not happy with putin and Its gonna cause him discomfort in the coming years .
Sadly We cant just cut the cable to them . the lovely DNS system could tank .
the USA needs more white hat hackers to take on the threats we see . Sadly the USA puts computer Nerds last on the list of love . 'Merca We put sports on the top..
Last night I got no sleep . I was up ALL night doing a password flush . Perhaps we need to send the bill of lost work time to russia and see how they like it .
Let's not turn this into a political debate or flaming of another country. Discussing the issue is fine, but we have forum members here from all countries. Please be considerate.
Does it not stand to reason that there should be as many crooks in the crumbling Soviet Empire as there are per capita in the rest of the world.
The rich intend to stay that way and have no qualms whatever about the means of doing it.
The more things change the more exactly things are as they have always been.
Someone sold you a house and kept a key to the back door for themselves. The way things go around is what led to the key being stolen from them.
There are passwords and then there are passwords. The more complicated the password and the more often it is changed the more effective it will be.
We should always keep in mind that the holder of the backdoor key does not need a password.
For the record from a historical context you Cant keep discussions 100% politic free that are on/ or related Russian gangs and maifa .. Its just the nature of the beast in this case . I did a Ton of reading on the BRIC's back in college.
My Points are of a economic and Security point of view not whom is in office or there political views .
I tend to pick up on any econ based issues in this world * runs in the fam so to say *

Context is not necessary. This type of discussion is not appropriate here.
Does that mean we can actually verify that are passwords were hacked?
Why do the Russians do these things to nice people like us? Well, I suppose that NSA and the CIA seem to be doing the same to them. Everyone is playing 'push back' these days.
Hollywood always needs a villian. The world would be a safer place if all nations would tone down their national pride a bit and deal more with criminality.
I suspect 1.2 billion passwords pretty much makes the whole database a bit overwhelming. I have trouble keeping just a list of 500 friends and associates up to date.
Actually I wanted to try hacking a facbook account , my own,,,, I googled how to and followed the instructions till finally I needed to pay 5 bucks with my credit card. I knew it was time to quit.
