Interesting S2 Additions: CMUCam 5, BeagleBone Black and Hokuyo Laser

Hey there,

A customer brought in an interesting set of S2 modifications today for his Master's EE program thesis.

The S2s are configurable over WiFi so the Linux OS can be accessed to control the S2. Both robots are networked together over XBee.

The S2 was used because of the high-precision encoders, access to the hacker port and all-around ease of firmware development.

Very cool! Hope he shares his discoveries and demonstrations on Youtube or Vimeo.

I might have saved this poor college student $750: Just posted yesterday about a $400 laser scanner which compared favorably to a $1150 Hokuyo unit: https://sites.google.com/site/mechatronicsguy/rplidar-review

The S2 is very easy to hack, once you get the hole drilled for the hacker port. adding components is a breeze,

What are you lasering(sic) with that big ol' laser? That thing looks serious..

Hey Ken - any more info on where we can find out more about what this customer is doing?

Yes, very likely! The customer is our own Daniel Harris who has developed a sophisticated and useful navigation system for his Masters in Electronic Engineering program at University North Texas. He just left Parallax for the next two months to finish his paper and claim his degree. He comes back to Rocklin in December, and at that time we'll talk him into posting his thesis.

That will be very interesting to see.

Those hacked S2's are really something.

@Tommy, the blinky LED cube is cool. One of these days I need to build a robot with gratuitous blinky lights.

    Now this is gratuitous...
