I do a lot of useless things in a month. This box would be perfect to get them all done. As soon as you flick the switch it opens just enough
for a little arm to push the switch back
It amazes me that people would go to such effort and expend so much time to craft a nice box and all for their "useless box" project and then use a micro-controller to make it work when all you need is a motor and a spring and a tiny bit of mechanism.
I had a very similar box back in the 1960's. It was a money box. You put a coin in a little slot on top of a black box. That would close a circuit that drove a motor that pushed a green plastic "Dracular hand" out of the lid, which grabbed the coin and started to retract. At that point the circuit was broken and a spring snapped the hand and your coin into the box.

Add some blinking LEDs and a some speaker sounds to make it more interesting.
Does it open after a set time or does the time change?
Here's one I made.
