Of course, you can't find a decent 2x4 at Home Depot. I hope their printer supplies fare better.
What's a 2x4? You mean 1 something by 3 something?
Th 'raw' cut planks are 2" x 4" (+/- a reasonable margin, of course)
Generally, 2x4 will be 48x98mm after 'adjustment'
(Adjustment meaning running it through a planer)
Warp means they cut the timber before it was properly dried...
Bl**dy amateurs!
Name the 1991 movie where that quote came from. Another "Must Watch" like 1990's Red Oktober.
Is there a part 2?
Around here, 2x4s are 1 1/2" x 3 1/2". I can remember when they were 1 5/8" x 3 5/8". Before that, they were 1 3/4" x 3 3/4". Now, either planers have gotten coarser over time, or the rough-cut size has shrunk. I suspect the latter.

Back in my Mill Wright days, The Saw Kerf width was 1/4" on rotary saws, and 3/16" set for band saw blades, MOUNTAINS of saw dust..
Nowadays, I'm not even sure they use "Blades"...
As an aside, does any one have any experience with said 3D printer from Home Depot?
I could be one of the suckers that buys one. I don't mind waiting an hour for a chess piece, What kind of Software does this machine use?
How many rolls of 'Weed Wacker' string does it take to make a two inch tall Bishop?
Can I use Weed Wacker string?
So many questions...:nerd:

Ten years ago when HD shrunk their 2x4s, they had a big display in their store about how many millions of trees would be saved annually by going smaller. A warm & fuzzy, feelgood, green enviro-, save the planet initiative. BTW, they never dropped their prices.
Home Depot is rarely your cheapest or best option, just convenient to have everything under one roof. They are better than Lowe's, however. Lowe's consistently manages to be out of stock only on things I need. They are right across the street from HD and nearly deserted. Not sure how they survive, my Lowe's make Radio Shack's business model look successful.
I think what would be more interesting is if they offered 3D printing, as well as laser cutting and such at the store. They could set up some really nice equipment at the store, connect it to the Internet and it could be like getting prints from digital pictures at a local store.
That said, it will be cool to see these going more "main stream."
As to lumber, I gave up on that years ago. I just cannot figure out how you are supposed to build anything with those spiral shaped things they call boards. I swear when I was a kid they were rectangles, but now they are so twisted. I figure there must be some secret to knowing how to dig through hundreds of 2x4's to find one that won't twist up overnight, but I don't know how to do it.
The narrower kerf is due to better metalurgy in the blades.
Anyone see a 3D printer in Radio Shack yet?
