been experiencing something odd in the editor

Hi All,

Starting a couple weeks back, I noticed that the "blinky-cursor" normally seen while editing posts has disappeared leaving me to "guess where I am" in a line of text.

I've checked my forum settings and can find nothing to control what type of cursor is used in the editor.

It doesn't matter if I use the simple, or advanced editors.

Anyone have an idea?

***interesting...while creating this post, the blinky-cursor displayed. But after executing the preview post function, it has now disappeared.

***weird - now it's back...what the?

(for this message, I hit the "reply" with the arrow next to it (next to "reply with quote") and I had a cursor from the start).

I've noticed the same across several platforms, definitely in Firefox, not 100% sure about Chrome. I don't use the others......

If I need a cursor (which I usually do), I go to insert an emoticon and then cancel out of it and then you have a cursor for the rest of the time you are editing that message.

I haven't changed any settings within the forum software. I'm sure I've had Firefox updates.

This is created with the "Reply to Thread" button and I do not currently have a cursor.

Any of the "pop-up" functions from the tool bar give you a cursor when you cancel out of them.

    Hope this helps with debugging.

This is using Chrome with the reply and arrow button next to "reply with quote" - Chrome gave me a cursor with this entry into the editor.

This is Chrome using the "Reply to Thread" button. Once I clicked in the editor window, I had a cursor.

This sounds more like a browser or PC issue than a forum issue. Maybe you tapped your Insert key accidentally. Some programs react to that by changing the cursor.

Edit: Missed your last two posts. I've always had to click in the edit window before beginning typing. I think that's normal behavior.

Hi Jim - Firefox rev 30.0

Now that you and others asked the question, I'd have to say "things" started going sideways since the last Firefox update.

And, this is ocurring on two different XP sp3/FF v30.0 'puters

Hmmmmmmmmm....guess I'll give Interweb Exploder a go and see what happens.

@Mr. Pilgrim - verified the insert key makes no difference.

This is Netscape - clicked on "Reply to Thread" and this time I had a cursor in the editor window.

    ...so testing is inconsistent.:frown:

Although it probably is a Firefox bug, I'm not seeing it myself.
There's a history of it happening.

I hate saying this, but did you just try rebooting? Too many people never actually power down their computer, just suspend or hibernate, so it never gets a "fresh" start.
Another thing you can try is updating your graphics drivers... it's fixed a lot of weird stuff over the years (inexplicable 16 pixel high green bar on youtube videos, etc)

I'm married to Chrome at the moment and have not had those anomalies. I use IE sometimes, (when printing USPS labels), but Chrome seems to support most everything.

Yup. Full power-down, wait minutes between usage.

...well, it appears that it's a Firefox v30.0 issue.

I accessed the Forum with my lovely wife's computer that runs some funky Yahoo-oriented version of Firefox (definitely not v30.0) and had no problems in the editor.

So, something went sideways with FF v30.0 - guess I need to poke about FF and see if there's some setting with which I need to tweak.

I see it also on ff v30, although I get the cursor occasionally. I switch to "raw mode" (I think it's called - I'm on Android now) and I have a cursor.

    Tor,

Well - trying again from a 'puter at work running FFv25 and there's no problem with the cursor.

So now it really looks like version 30.0 is the culprit.

    Great...

I have seen the same issue with both Firefox and Chrome. Tried all sorts of things but never could nail it down to something. Just been dealing with it for weeks and ignoring it. It irritating sometimes.

Yes, I believe it did work on v25 before - I went directly from v25 (or _possibly_ v24.5) to v30 and noticed the problem.
When that's said, I really hate this forum software sometimes - well, every time I have to edit on Android. It's nearly impossible, because the screen scrolls to the top for nearly every operation, and the cursor suddenly jumps here and there while I'm trying to delete (or backspace) characters. It does not happen with any other VB forum, only here, so this version must be severly tweaked (for no apparent gain I must say).
