100X 5V Regulators for $2.32

How can them boys do that, just 2.32 cents each? http://www.ebay.com/itm/KDQ16-New-100PCS-WS78L05-78L05-TO-92-5V-100mA-Voltage-Regulator-IC-SSY-2294/121185216575 Sale ends in 7 hours, then you'll pay $2.49!

Ten for $2.57 at Mouser, plus shipping. http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=78L05

A 78L05 is good for 100 mA @5V. A lot of sensors still use 5V, even if you're a 3.3V kinda guy. At that price, throw them in your parts bin and you'll break even if you use ten in your whole lifetime. Or consider leaving them to someone in your will.

"We will carefully test every item before shipment."

    Yeah, sure they will.

They're either factory rejects(possibly too many random samples from a production lot failed the test and the entire lot was scrapped) or they're leftover from some schmuck ordering a 2000 set PCBs populated with these and the factory billed them for a 2500 component reel(or whatever count is on a typical reel with T092-sized components), then dumped the leftover on the market to get paid twice for them.

I'd feel much more secure if they came in some sort of reel or tape...

Could well be rejects, that's how China rolls. There's no shortage of sellers, though, in the "hundred parts for under $3" category, so it's not a single isolated blowout.

Nobody seems to be aware that there are occasions when you have a defective reel or tape. High humidity can cause them to fall apart. An Asia has high humidity which also happens to be great for low static electricity in production facilities.

I just could be that these were in tapes or reels that fell apart and are 100% good. I don't thiink there is anyone out there that will repackage loose product for customers.

The data sheet for those regulators is here: http://www.datasheet-pdf.com/datasheet/WingShing/718113/WS78L05.pdf.html

They are made by a company called Wingshing.

    That explains everything.

Can you elaborate on why that explains everything? (some of us aren't in the inner circle as to the evil doings of Wingshing)

Actually, they may be one of the best semiconductor manufacturers on the planet and I'm just basing too much on the fact that I've never heard of them.

I bet Digi-Key sells tons of their stuff. Hmm, no sorry.
Well, Mouser surely does. Darn, wrong again.

I wonder why two of the most reputable suppliers of electronic parts don't sell their fine products. Go figure.

On the other hand, maybe the Wingshing factory is where all those TI, ST Micro and ON Semi parts are coming from and the joke's on us.

    :):):)

    Lol

Well..they do say "We will test every item before shipment". Sounds like a lot of work to me, looking at that pile of components.. :)

When you have 1.2 billion people, it is surprising what you can do { or say ;-) }.

My days of thinking I need to buy parts by the 100s are over. I still have 25 SX chips, about a dozen Propellers, and so on.

Come on Loopy, you're not that old. Stock up, it's Hammer time!

OTOH, my very old friend says "At my age, I don't even buy green bananas." :)

So, I am debating as to whether I should use a couple of these or a couple step down converters. What would you pros recommend to use with a Ping sensor and an IR receiver on separate circuits?

Bad deal - you discover the bad ones when they latch up and fry your whole board. False economy to my mind.

These things are all over ebay and work well.

Duane, I have both. I am trying to conserve space so thought I would make a couple of circuits with the regulators. I would have to use 2 of the step down converters and that takes up more space.
