At about 23 years of age, I tried to seek a career based on something I liked to do. I made a long list of things I liked to do and wanted to achieve, none of which paid well or offered much security.
I still think that if one is really interested in computers, becoming a first-rate Systems Administrator for a small system's accounting, data base, and office records is a slot that could be very worthwhile. You do need all the maths you can get to become a good engineer these days. Without a strong foundation in maths, I doubt if you will ever get a PE.
Nothing wrong with having a day job that pays the bills and supports the family while retaining a passion for science and maths --- a lot of people do so. Having accounting, tax law, business law and economics courses in your education are worthwhile regardless of what you get a degree in
