FYI....

Note that they don't mention that most engineers/programmers work more than a 40 hour week

Interesting that they mention the delay of marriage...is that an indication of working overtime and no social life?

The Economist thinks that the most secure career in today's world is likely dentistry. And it seems that Personal Trainers do better than engineers or scientist.

At about 23 years of age, I tried to seek a career based on something I liked to do. I made a long list of things I liked to do and wanted to achieve, none of which paid well or offered much security.

I still think that if one is really interested in computers, becoming a first-rate Systems Administrator for a small system's accounting, data base, and office records is a slot that could be very worthwhile. You do need all the maths you can get to become a good engineer these days. Without a strong foundation in maths, I doubt if you will ever get a PE.

Nothing wrong with having a day job that pays the bills and supports the family while retaining a passion for science and maths --- a lot of people do so. Having accounting, tax law, business law and economics courses in your education are worthwhile regardless of what you get a degree in
