Anyone doing SDR?

I want to start decoding ADS-B and found this article - http://www.hamradioscience.com/10-ads-b-receiver-rtl2832u-r820t/

ADS-B aside, I'm looking for suggestions on a receiver and software combination <$200. External antenna is a must.

February of last year I ordered this guy and this guy.

I tried three different programs. One was HDSDR. The names of the other two I don't recall. All three were pretty impressive.

Anyway, I dabbled a bit with these devices but was less than overwhelmed by the results. One of my nephews persisted longer in the cause and got better results. Still, it wasn't spectacular. I've been spoiled most of my life by $20,000 rf service monitors.

It seemed like a big mistake at first, listening to all kinds of weird freqs, then installing the trunking software and picking up all kinds of cool and not so cool conversations. After two pretty long nights of little sleep and dreams of alien invasions I went back to the ADS-B goal.

Worked a lot better than I thought. I'm participating in the ADS-B Hub network and developing a ground station for the flight school. I need another adapter so I can do both frequencies. Figure the US would have two...

That is with just the little antenna it came with, I do live on a hill though.
