This was a first for me. Yesterday I ran across several of these:
They were mounted in tubes to detect object flow at Discovery Place in Charlotte, NC.
Cool. (for me at least) I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of the whole apparatus. It was a tall (12 feet) vertical acrylic tube about 10 inches in diameter with a fan in the bottom and a small opening to put strips of paper in. They would float to the top and out falling back down to the floor to be picked up and put in again. The pings were set up in increments all the way up to top and would trigger indicator lights as the paper pieces passed through the tube.
