The powerful motors and gearboxes scare me!

Glad to see red wheels instead of the standard yellow. These motors are the same as on the Magician chassis except they have new tires. The RadioShack tires look really nice whereas the standard tires that those motors generally come with are awful - their center is concave, the tires only make contact at the edges. These tires look to be slightly convex, as a tire should be, contact with the ground is made in the center of the tire.

This appeals to the little boy in me.

I used to love playing with dump-trucks and all kinds of construction equipment.

Maybe this could be like the model train thing. A big old 4x8 box on a table with lots of dirt and building materials. Have the robots build a city for you!

    Robot Killer App!

    Gotta have them all ....

On the surface these seem pretty neat. But this is RS we are talking about so....

I would likely buy a couple kits if RS offered them sans-controller. At 150 that basic kit seems a little bit steep.
    Yikes ~$70 bucks... http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=24431276
Makershed has the kit at $80 and the description there states that it does not come with the board...

The basic starter kit does not include the A...... Controller. Now you have the perfect place to use that $7.49 quick start board you got on clearence at RS.
I like the looks of the motor kit, but right now I have too many irons in the fire to justify getting one.

Good luck to the Shack selling these, but $72 (on sale!) is too much for a line follower IMO. It says "starter kit" which implies modularity. If so, they should cross-sell other expansion kits (maybe $15-25) to add functionality on the same page. Do those even exist? Might make more sense to sell a deluxe 10-in-one reconfigurable robot kit for $150 that really covered a broad spectrum.

My local 'Shack has these $71.xx on sale, regularly $79.xx. They also have 3 different add-on kits... a gripper, a catapult and one with 6 motors (high, medium and low torque). Almost bought one of the 'bots, but a Prop Activity board caught my eye.

Actually I was looking for the 7 digit RS part number. I think it will be 276xxxx. If not on the package, the on the receipt. I was able to find with Parallax model number! 277-225 I will order for my store when I get back from a little vacation time.
