Well spend three or four years road testing the P2 in performance cars, maybe even sponsor a NASCAR so as to prove to potential adopters you have proven and reliable tech. Then also factor in that you're a latecomer and competing against established giants like Freescale and others who
have dedicated lines of micro-controllers for the automotive sector.

The P2 might be best suited for management of all those batteries that are charging and discharging.

Maybe NASCAR will create a special racing class for experimental ECUs.

    Sounds about right.

Is the P2 rated for automotive environments?

NASCAR is busy trying to save the sport...the recession has hit them hard.

IF the IP is really free, this is a very BIG deal.

It has been interesting to watch the industry try to block his attempts to bring electrics to America.

Just one story...there are many, many others.

Yes, and now Elon is hoping there will be a field of able competetors.

I like this guy. He largely stands alone in how he's applying serious capital to real risks, doing real engineering, and attempting to resolve real problems and make genuine advances.

Good on him. There are a lot of others with similar resources who really don't have the smarts, vision and drive to apply them.

This will play out in very interesting ways.

'Tesla will continue to seek patents for its new technology to prevent others from poaching its advancements and then filing their own patents as a "blocking maneuver." But those future patents will also be open to anyone willing to follow Musk's "good faith" guidelines.'

    A necessary defensive move?

Will any significant Propeller momentum be easily affected by the lack of such defense?

Find out next week on "As the Propellers Spin" .....

Agreed..it reminds me of a repeat of the attacks on electrics we have seen before.

Its not technology that is the problem..its politics and those who benefit from the present system at the expense of the rest of us.

When I was a kid, my first girl friend's father has one of the earlier electric cars ever made -- a French car. I am not sure but I think it was 1908 vintage.

The core issue remains. Gasoline cars are easy to refill, electrics require a wait to recharge... take more planning and being a bit less spontaneous in your use of transport.

But we may get a top-down mandate soon from governments around the world to quit internal combustion for personal transport ASAP. Big long haul trucks and fleet vehicles have been shifting over to LNG already.

The biggest problem with electric cars is that the cheapest transport around is what you have already paid for and sitting in your garage.

At least the hybrids have definitely had a break through by now - in Japan at least. The most sold car in Japan in 2013 was Toyota Aqua, a hybrid made for the home market mainly (a bit difficult to find outside Japan). It has the drive train of a Prius (also an extremely popular car in Japan), but is slightly smaller, with a better (more normal) view through the back window, and cheaper. I haven't yet seen any electric charging stations, maybe they're somewhere but hybrids seems to be where they have their focus.

These silent cars sneaking up on you when you are a pedestrian is a bit unnerving though.. definitely some danger there. Like if everybody were deaf. I like the idea which Nissan (IIRC) came up with, speakers which produce real "engine" sound. That system supposedly let you load whatever sound you wanted, e.g. a V8.

Ha, ha... Silent cars sneaking up on you. I have already noticed the eery feeling I get when an electric bicycle or electric motor scooter zips by me on my gasoline driven motor scooter. And then there is the problem that many of the drivers won't turn on their lights at night -- they want to get more distance out of their battery.

Maybe Nissan could add a system to replicate a wild stallion at a full gallop.

I'd rather have a hybrid. I am not a big fan of handling wet and muddy charging cables in bad weather.
