We have lots of interesting places to visit in Los Angeles, and one of them is an eclectic store called Wacko in Echo Park. I popped in yesterday to see a presentation by my friend, Ave Rose. While there, I came across this piece next to Ave's exhibit.
A while later a gentleman was looking at it, turned and saw me, and then said, "Jon McPhalen, right?" I'm normally really good with faces, but didn't recognize him. Turns out he made the piece and uses the BASIC Stamp 2 to control it. As you can see, a PIR is used to sense someone near the piece, then Ping))) sensors are used to guide the eyes to the nearest target -- can even follow a person that moves back and forth in front of it.
His name is Brian Poor, and he's an immensely gifted artist. I visited his shop about six years ago but we hadn't seen each other since. The timing was a bit fortuitous, perhaps, as he finds himself struggling to get the BASIC Stamp to do the kinds of complex animations he wants to do. I'm looking forward to showing him how much fun he can have with the Propeller.
