Well, compared to the original Godzilla series... special effects and animation have come a long, long way.
Japan has a very special relationship with Gozilla as it combines their Shinto beliefs in animal spirits (kami), a dread of mutants from nuclear fallout, and the mythology that Japan was founded by a god and goddess that came from the sea. They really have a very unique and insular point of view about themselves as part of humanity. They had no written language until the arrival of Chinese Buddhist monks in about 650 AD, so there is a lot of mystery in their past and belief systems.
I actually belong to the First Church of Gozilla. Everyone can sing along...
"Gozilla loves me this I know, for the Mothra tells me so...."
