Depends where you are with Frontier. I had old copper Telco plant from the CO to my NID. 6 meg down and 700k up - I was told that was the best they'd offer as the had no plans to build out fiber in our area. And they ARE the phone company, and didn't offer naked DSL, so it was $90 a month for that with phone.

    From the story:

"...pays $3.56 for each megabit per second (Mbps) of download speed,

That's outrageous. There is some serious gouging going on in the USA.

speedtest.net tells me this connection is operating at approximately 11Mbps upload AND download.

So that would be about 40 dollars a month.

What do we pay for this here?

5.00 Euros per month. Only about 50c per Mbps.

Doesn't matter.... when I go to sites out of Taiwan, the degredation is all the same.

I have basic comcast (internet only) here in WV. I normally average about 24 Mbps for ~30 bucks a month. Fast enough for streaming HD, and VPN to work.

    US broadband prices are NUTS...

When I was a General Contractor in Oregon, there was a story of one fellow that bought a piece of remote land (one of thise isolated Homestead Act sections of 160 acres). The land had power, well water, and he built a sceptic tank when he built his home. Then he discovered that to install a phone would cost $30,000 USD as they had to pull wire for it from far far away.

He decided that he had to have the telephone service, so he paid up.

The end result is that every piece of property along the access roads into his property suddenly were able to get a telephone installed for a very reasonable price. If you want it bad enough to be first, you gotta pay.

I wonder if Cave Junction still has an independent telephone company wit 4 digit telephone numbers. Calling a friend in Cave Junction used to tend to take 10 minutes to convince the operator that you need them to put through the call and there is no direct dialing into their switchboard. It was that was in the 1970s.
