RC Cars

Just tossing out a question and I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

Has anyone adapted an inexpensive RC car to be operated by a BS or Propeller? I'm pretty sure it's been done but I don't "remember" seeing any posts on the subject. Of course I seldom remember the drive to work in the morning!

I've been away far too long, much to my robot's dismay. A new shiny thing! Recently got an 8 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with Dec and RA motor drives.

These Wall Racers are very cool, but PicAxe based. Nothing a Stamp or Prop couldn't handle.

I know there is a thread somewhere around here that talked about this very thing. I will keep digging to see if I can find it.

    Edit: Here's one: http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php/141577-Basic-Stamp-controlled-RC-CAR

and here is some good info about using a BS2: http://www.ehow.com/list_6855722_basic-stamp-ii-projects.html

I would say use an 2 wheel drive 1/8th to 1/10 scale RC truck and a Propeller. BS2 is going to need additional circuitry, is larger and will be a lot harder to add features to. I would say 1/8th scale minimum for a BS2 board, if you were to make your own controller board you could go smaller.

The reasoning behind the truck is they have more room under the hood. You can get them used on eBay pretty cheap. They also have a spot for a larger battery, better suspension and offer a greater area to mount external sensors.

I'd also look for something with a steering servo and ESC that they work from RC servo pulses (should have a standard three position plug). This will make things like reverse a lot easier than building your own speed controller. If you find something that you can use your already existing battery and charger for you wouldn't need to add additional expenses.

I think a Parallax employee made an award winning RoboMagellan RC truck. If you want to see what the best things to hack are, definitely Google RoboMagellan.
