Gps and magnetic compass mounting

On one of my large robots I have a GPS reciver mounted in a small arcylic dome to keep it dry.

I want to mount a magnetic compass with it but was worried about interference between the two.

They would be stacked with about 1.5 inches between them.

The GPS would be on top and the magnetic compass would be on the bottom layer. Also the GPS has a metal EMF shield covering the bottom.

Has anybody else mounted them close together?

thanks, john

I have not mounted a compass near a GPS receiver but I do have GPS receivers mounted on metal brackets for timekeeping applications and that is not a problem. If the shielding on the GPS is a magnetic material such as steel or nickel it will affect the compass reading. You can see if this is the case with your unit by moving the GPS unit around the compass to see if it affects the reading.
