Piezo Speaker

I teach at a community college. Part of a course involves playing with the Boe Bot. The manual describes how to wire the speaker and make it beep. We can also make it play tunes. The problem is the sound is very faint.

I probably have some op-amps or logic gates laying arround that could be used to convert the logic high to the 6 volt Vin and/or to drive the two pins in oposite directions. But the "+" label implies that I can't drive the two pins in oposite directions. I want to read the datasheet, but I could not find it. I also don't understand why a piezo speaker (if that's really what it is) needs a certain polarity. I know I can do this using a different speaker, but I like the way the Parallax speaker fits on the breadboard.

Can anyone point me to the datasheet? Does anyone know if amplification would help?

Thank in advance.

PS. I'm new to the forum and apparantly can't use the search function effectively. But the "similar threeads" function is very good. I now see there are two relevant threads:

BS2 & Piezo Speaker http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php/107689-BS2-amp-Piezo-Speaker
These suggest using a paper cone, which I will try. They also suggest driving the pins in oposite directions, but that would make the "+" pin more negative than the other. I don't know if this was based on theory or practive. I would still like to see the datasheet.

Try changing the frequency of the tone... iirc, it gets really loud around 2500hz.

That is a good idea. But if we play a tune, we need a variety of tones.

You can find the frequency that is the loudest, and use the closest key/octave for your tune.
