Ken

Thank you for the schedule update on the prop 2... http://www.parallax.com/news/2014-02-24/propeller-2-schedule-update-february-2014

I realize it's just an estimate...but it is awesome to have some time frames...Guess what is on my Christmas list for 2014:)

Yes thanks for the update Ken

There have been some amazing improvements since the design at the last shuttle run. Look forward to seeing the final result of all this.

A P2 early adopter seminar sounds like fun!

Thanks for posting this dr hydra, I missed that.

    Early adopter seminar sounds fun.

You're all welcome. This schedule was carefully reviewed and agreed by Chip, and I'm working to keep us on track.

All of you can help, too. Your encouragement to keep the P2 project within already-defined scope, purchasing Parallax products, and vetting out our P2 design on FPGA are all important.

I didn't see any of those early adopter seminars coming to a town near me....none for Seville, nothing for Burbank, surprisingly none for Creston, either (they even have their own livestock auction hall!!)!

An Early Adopter Seminar is an acceptable substitute for PropExpo :)

Exactly, Cody. That's the idea. We'd like to host a core group to get up close with the P2 in FPGA by running and coding some of our examples with Chip showing us the way.

As soon as we have the first revision of the FPGA board complete we will start making plans. The idea would be that you buy an FPGA board, come to Parallax for two days, and walk away with lots of experience. Does this seem interesting to you and others?

I'll buy. It's like a Propeller Expo but more technical. I watch the newsletters of the big chip makers and attend training sessions and the like. I usually throw away the boards shortly afterwards, but I think this will be much more fun. I've been following the Propeller2 development, but I've gotten lost in the past month. Too many small bits to keep up with.

This would be fantastic - a mix of FPGA and P2 all in one - perhaps in the evening Chip could show off some small parts of the Verilog and how it works.
BUT, my other half just spent our FF (frequent flyer points) on a trip to visit my daughter in Korea :(

Sounds great to me. If the seminar is free, but you have to bring a $1000 or so Parallax product with you, then I can get (real job) to pay for everything... Personally, I would hope that is on a weekday.

Has any thought been given (yet) to making it into a live/webinar for those of us that won't be live (by that I mean unable to make it in person)?

I could probably swing a couple days off to attend/play along via webinar but I couldn't take the 4 days and money needed to attend in person.

I assume we can still be early adopters and not attend.

An early adopters seminar sounds great!
I'm not a fan of flying (Oz is a LONG way from everywhere!) but I'd ignore that to attend such an event! :)

From a business point of view it may be a good idea to form some kind of package, that would include the costs of accommodation, seminar and hardware. In some countries/cases that might make it tax deductable.

You're totally correct, Lachlan. After all, we will need to attract business customers so this is exactly what we shall do.

Just mention "workshop" or "instruction / lab" and it's very easily deductible. Training / people investments are often budgeted anyway, for the double!

Is parallax still planning on producing a simple demo board? Please say yes!

Do you mean a Parallax Custom FPGA board or a "sample-run" Propeller2 board? Both.

From the linked article at the top of the page:
    What About Sample Devices?

Once we’ve qualified the design we will certainly distribute a limited number of sample Propeller 2 to our tool developers, early adopters, commercial users and key customers. More details on this to follow, but we’d expect to have at least a few hundred modules for this purpose. It’s the least we can do to thank all of the Propeller 2 contributors. We’ll have a sample program in place by the time we have working chips.

Parallax Propeller 2 Cyclone V FPGA Development Tool

Concurrent with the completion of the Propeller 2, Parallax is developing our own FPGA board based on the Altera Cyclone V-A7 processor for release in May or June. Customers will be able to download the Propeller 2 core (as they are currently doing with the Terasic DE2-115 and DE0 Nano FPGA boards) to a design that closely resembles functionality of the full Propeller 2. You’ll be able to program it in Spin, ASM, C and a number of other languages the community will quickly develop.

I am in. Visited Parallax once. Impressive company and fun to be there.

Gladly I do need no airplane to get there. Just cruising along in my SL for some hours...

so you have by now 7 of your 1000.

and ozpropdev might get the price for the longest trip...

    Enjoy!

A complete production run board....like the propeller 1 project board...is parallax planning on producing one for the propeller 2

I couldn't do it as a package... Can you also make it so the FPGA board includes a free ticket to the seminar?

How soon will the seminar be scheduled? Also, I'm assuming that the seminar will happen regardless of the chip's schedule? I ask these questions because plane tickets aren't going to get any cheaper. :)

Not 100% certain that it is the new logo. Maybe don't go get a tattoo of it yet. It is the closest we've gotten after several (hundred) attempts...

I like the logo. But, I think this is a Prop1 chip (Q44), right? Are you replacing the beanie?

I REALLY like this logo. Well done guys! It contains all the basic letter forms of "Parallax" in a creative design. Outstanding!

The core messages I get are:

-sharp (as in smart, able to comprehend, perceptive)
-robust (solid in dealings and product quality)
    -more than meets the eye

That might be a bit busy.
The candidate is nice - clean, and works in P and X, and also reduces onto small devices ok.

    - but I do see the point that it lacks any 'octet' visual hints.
Maybe 8 black 'dots' in almost a circle at the black centre of the circle, P to make a larger visual cutout.
From a distance the 8 dots would be seen as a larger centre, up close it would show 8 elements, and look a little like
    a gear wheel...

Personally, I don't see the number 8 as all that significant. As soon as that number comes up, it's 8 of what? Cores, COGS --and what the heck is a COG, is that like clogs, those goofy dutch shoes? On the new chip, tasks, etc...?

Outside that, there is the many products and people represented. Really great logos are timeless and not limiting in basic ways. Look at the Nike "swoosh", for a great example of that. It's identifiable, and it conveys a lot of basic messages, but it really doesn't define the product it's on in a technical way, nor the company overall. Nike does a lot more than shoes. Parallax does more than produce Propeller chips too. Could do a lot more, who knows?

...which is why I don't think having 8 of something really is all that important. It's a detail unsuitable for an enduring logo to brand around IMHO.
