control a brushed motor?

Hello everyone. i have a question. im trying to build a rc car that is going to be operated by a bs2, and hopefully later from a propeller multicore.
the problem is when i try to plug in the bushed motor it starts spinning even though there is no command like pulsout, high. is there a way to control it by default or do i need an esc (electonic speed controller)
thank you

p.s. i think that i have already answered my question but i need a second opinion.

It would be helpful to know how you connected it up.

    1) directly from a pin and to ground
    2) pin, power going to + and from - to ground

You cannot power a motor from a microcontroller, period, you must use a motor driver circuit that can handle the
voltage and the high currents. Without knowing what the motor is there's not much more to say.

Judging from the likely scale of the project an Ld298 might work well. Find a complete board kit

www.micronauts.com may have that with a Propeller on the same board for sumobots

You'll want to move to the Propeller sooner than later. With the BS2, you probably won't be able to achieve clean speed control of the motor -- just simple on and off. With the Propeller, speed control fairly easy. As George points out, an H-Bridge needed in either case.
