I have a 74hc595n IC shift register chip which i am trying to use to control an 7segment display, my problem is that i have found little documentation on how to communicate between the chip and the boe bot. i know that i should probably be using a 74xx47 IC but due to time constraints i don't have time to order one.

Page 130 (140 of pdf) of StampWorks shows how to use a 74HC595 to light LEDs. This is a pretty common chip to use with 7-segment displays.

I used '595 shift registers in my 7-segment clock (controlled with a Propeller).

You might be able to find a better example using Rich's forum search page.
