Nice project, I will definitely build one of these. The video is particularly good, and makes it look easy. No etching, just copperclad board & glue to make a backplane, and wind a coil around a 1/4-20 bolt. The guy literally drops components on and solders them wherever they fall. Reminds me of similar projects from Popular Electronics magazine back in the 1970's. This and more projects like it might get some young folks digging in the Shack's component drawers again!

Who needs transistors? I ran across this site with DIY point contact semiconductors made by burning sulfur onto strips of galvanized steel. Negative resistance! Fasten it on a block of wood and poke around and pretty soon you have a transmitter! Other interesting science too.

That is an amazing site! Semicon, lasers, lawnmowers, it's got it all! The "flame triode" caught my attention. :)

It's only January 2 and it is my pleasure and hounour to have been outdone and undone by my hero Sir Tracy Allen.

The pleasure is mine, mi hermano!

I came upon that site in a search for a non-technical explanation of how a magnetic amplifier works. That site has one built using a clever arrangement of Radio Shack filament transformers. A small current DC current through the primary winding causes the inductance of the secondary winding to vary and thus control amps of AC current.
