What do you use to host your embedded images here?

I just read that the free image hosting service I've been using lately deletes pictures with more than 90 days of inactivity. I don't really like to use free image hosting because of how easy it would be for malicious activity to happen. I do have a company website I could upload to and link to that but I'm hesitant to do that as well. When I upload pics to the Parallax forum, although there is a substantial quota I feel like the forum isn't for storage, and the image preview is too small.

Any ideas?

I wish everyone uploaded images directly to the forum. I hate coming across dead links to photos.

I always resize my images to make them a manageable size before uploading them but lots (most) of the images make the forum a more interesting place and I like think increase Parallax's business.

If there's a good reason not to store them on the forum I'd really like to know but it sure seems like a good idea to me. Big hard drives are pretty darn cheap these days.

It makes a lot of sense to host the important stuff here. I can't seem to get that image preview size thing to work. I get the upload it, preview it and copy the source url, but it still has never worked for me. I think I'll try that next it has been awhile.

Do you mean the small inline thumbnails?

I used to always get small inline thumbnails when I click "insert inline" but lately I only get them once in a while.

So I either use full size pictures or leave the thumbnails down in the attachment box.

Microsoft SkyDrive, I go to my picture folder (online) there the whole folder is selected as public.
    Select: View original
Copy the browser url and use that inside brackets here

For the level of activity here a DropBox public folder link would be adequate if you don't like the way the forum itself hosts them.

I'd really really like to talk you guys into making sure wherever your pictures are stored that get used in a forum post aren't going to disappear in a few (or many) years.

Before I ever posted on the forum I used to frequently search it for information (and I continue to do so). I frequently found the answer to my question in posts many years old. I think it would be nice if posts were permanent and the information remained accessible for many years to come.

I'm afraid DropBoxes and SkyDrives will eventually be cleared of old pictures to make room for new data. If the photos were stored on the forum itself, then (IMO) they'd be more likely to still be around as long as this forum exists.

I do agree that it's hard to find old attachments in the "manage attachments" section but I can usually find the photo I want to repost in the thread where it was originally shared. The location of the original instance can then be referenced to allow the same photo to be displayed in multiple locations on the forum.

If I were King of the Forum, I'd make all photos attached to posts automatically copied to the Parallax servers so there wouldn't be any broken links to photos.

I think the "Completed Projects" forum had the requirement that all media related to the project had to be uploaded to the forum and off site media wasn't allowed. (I'm not positive this was the case, but I thought I read some discussion along these lines.)

SkyDrive and DropBox are good suggestions. I don't really trust them much though.

I think for important stuff I will use the forum and ~100K pics, I finally was able to pull the image url and repost it so the picture preview is larger than the thumbnail.

For less mission critical items I guess you can't beat the simplicity of DropBox.

Also Picasa/Google hosting, I completely forgot about that I've had albums up there for years. I think that would be my #2 choice.

Glad we got this sorted, thanks!

I post off-site links in the forum when there's a chance that the image I'm linking to is copyrighted. Linking to a copyrighted image vs. copying and hosting it outright may be a "distinction without a difference," but it still has the effect of salving my conscience a bit.

On the image topic, I need to start removing metadata from the pics I post. Everyone should.

By "metadata" are you referring to the hex keys that Google adds to their links, singling you out as the source?

More along the lines of jpeg EXIF lat and lon. I see that some places strip it and some don't.

I prefer to put them here. Disk storage is cheap, and the data is here for the long term. I've some great info put elsewhere that is somewhat broken due to this problem. Not good.
