Are the Parallax forums getting slower?

I have noticed that these forums seem to be loading slower and slower..on a number of different computers..for me.

Anyone else seeing performance issues?

I also note that my CPU is hitting 100% on some the loads..again on different machines...and I do not recall seeing that before.

So has Parallax changed the BBS software?

Thanks

I've had slow response times but that's just the Internet of things. If the CPU is pegging from a HTTP request then you most likely have something else going on like a Virus Checker or maybe network configuration.

Phew! You mean page loading speed!

From this thread's title, I assumed you meant the intellectual content (or lack thereof) of my nearly 11K posts that was bogging down the general pace of the Forum. :)

Well, if you weren't posting people wouldn't be checking the forums every 3 seconds :)

I see the same behavior on different machines so I don't think it is a virus or other utilities.

Maybe they ported the BBS to run on an Arduino....;<)

Maybe Santa is checking to see if members are naughty or nice?

Does it seem like just the main page loads slow for you, then once you're in everything is fast?

I was thinking there was some content added to that main page that lags a bit lately.

I haven't noticed any changes in forum speed. Try powering down your router and powering it back up again.

Your particular routing to the Parallax servers might be causing it. Each of us takes a slightly different road getting here.

If you run a traceroute from your computer you can see if there are any delays at one or more hops from your location to Parallax.com. You can use a free Web service to check the routing from an arbitrary location to compare.

    No.

Well, I would like to just say "No" but it seems that is too short a post for the forum software.

Posting from Finland by the way.

That could all be a Windows problem. Have you tried a Linux computer?

I have noticed a slow down and sometimes it locks. Happens on Android Xoom (crappy to start with) and Windows 7 on my laptop.

But, my W7 laptop was filling the HDD and slowing everything down to the point of dropping chars when I type (no, its not a virus). I archives some big folders so I now have plenty of space, but I am still dropping chars occasionally.

But I have this conspiracy theory. It has happened to all my laptops, but I have confirmed its not the laptops by re-installing a later OS.
As the OS (windoze) gets older, the updates seem to gradually slow your m/c. This is the incentive to upgrade your OS to a later version and pay ms some more $.
I am now starting to see the W7 slowdown.

Now, don't say turn off the updating. This is not totally possible because, even with the few programs on my live laptop, I always have activity on the internet as soon as I connect. I have disabled everything I can think of, yet it still goes out there!!! Big brother is watching ;)

Fortunately, I don't have a camera on my laptop, so USA SS are not spying on me via video at least - did you read about those hacks!

In Windows, I suspect it is just Registry clutter that eventually bogs everything down. I have never understood why I would have to buy a 3rd party application to clean up a fragmented Windows Registry. But it seems that as updates increase, the Registry can get tons of duplicate entries.. at least I saw that frequently in XP.

Since Linux is open-source, it doesn't get caught up in whatever clever nonsense the Registry does. And, being an entirely different file system makes it immune to the vast majority of viruses. Even if you do get a virus, it is easier and faster to reload the whole system, and having your data in a separate partition means scans and fixes for any potential virus are also faster.

TMT, As an afterthought about the 100% CPU usage, there was a recent bug introduced in the Microsoft updating service that causes the updater slug program to endlessly cycle, consuming 50% or more CPU time, especially if running during high demand for the updates, and in combination with certain anti-virus programs. I ended up disabling that service. This is not a new problem, but it does tend to crop up now and then. Open your process monitor and look for high activity in svchost.dll. The wuau*.* files are run in an instance of svchost. I found some useful tidbits with the search 'wuaueng.dll hogging cpu'.

Take note that you can't just kill the offending svchost process, as that will render your machine unable to connect to the Interwebs until you reboot.

The Windows registry can get filled up with useless junk if you add and remove programs frequently. It really is a good idea to reinstall Windows periodically. Probably once a year is often enough. I do it every 4 months, but that's just so I can use it without paying for it :)
