Virtual router

Can someone recommend a free or low cost "safe" Virtual router? I have trouble using the ipad off-shore while sailing, but my laptop has a high gain antenna that works fantastic. A virtual router allows me to use my ipad through the laptop.

In fact I wonder if I could somehow use the Propeller in some way to make one - that would be awesome :)

I have that same problem and I love it.

What OS is on your laptop?

If you're using LTE/GSM or something like that you can use internet connection sharing (ICS) in windows to bridge the laptop's wifi to the cellular. Then anything can connect to the laptop like a hot spot.

Do you have another wifi adapter you can plug into the laptop? Windows 7 ICS is pretty robust, I wouldn't buy any software until trying it. Not sure what you mean by safe though. I'm assuming you're connecting to public wifi hot spots along the coast?

Not sure on iPad gateway over USB or BT though I bet someone has done it.

Maybe something like this is what you want:

    They're about $19 on eBay.

Okay so basically I have used a free open source virtual router but its buggy. I have two wireless cards in my laptop one is High gain (it get signals from far away) the other is standard Acer isuue stuff (not a lot of power). I just want to buy a cheap or even free virtual router program thats not so buggy. The last one I downloaded tried to infect my PC but i caught it in time

Phil I don't have the space for more gadgets thanks though.

Oh I see so you already have the hardware and need a virtual router like the thread title hehe. I have never used one, there are lots of ICS tutorials I would go after first.

I would stick to sourceforge if you need open source http://sourceforge.net/directory/system-administration/networking/wireless/os:windows/freshness:recently-updated/

Check the notes about infections, some software will trigger anti-virus especially with internet security suites and virtual adapters.

    xanadu

Thanks for the link, I never use anti-virus software its a joke. Heck, I could program a virus in a few minutes that no antivirus will catch and if I can do it anyone could so why pay for something that wont work :) I think ill keep using what I have for now unless that link provides something useful. Again thanks. :)

I actually rather doubt that. Most modern Antivirus software uses sandboxed behavioral analysis to detect new threats, and it can get very effective.

Anyway, I don't see how the Win7 ICS wouldn't work for you. Set your high-gain WiFi to connect to the public access point, then make an ad-hoc network between your built-in wifi and the iPad, and use ICS to share the outside wifi connection with the inside wifi connection.

I would love to post a sample code to support my statement - otherwise I can email it to you if you are still curious.
