P2 2D/3D Internal Working Model?

I always get a lot out of seeing a 2D or 3D model. Would anyone benefit from seeing the basic internal processes(data flow)? The Prop 1 had a very simple graphic with the gear illustrating the 8 cogs plus hub. I am thinking of something on another level, possibly animated in the future. What is this best done in? Solidworks would work but is pricey and has a learning curve. I can whip up non animated stuff in CAD. For my own purposes I would like to do something as a starting point and see if there is any public merit. If anyone thinks this has value, especially for newbies, what would be the basics to illustrate?
Examples:
1. show 8 cog engines in a circular shape.
2. show cyclic access to hub
3. show cog interaction/path to all pins

But that's not a trivial task...

Or go full 3D with webgl using the three,js library. Also very easy to use.

Yeah, yeah, IE does not support webgl. So what?
