Internet Exploder 11

Just saw this notice on the FAA website at http://registry.faa.gov/renewregistration

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explore (IE) v11 as your internet browser, this site may not work for you. It appears that IEv11 currently doesn't work properly with another Microsoft product that this site also uses. You could try using the "compatibility mode" feature of IEv11 with this web site. Otherwise, this problem will persist until that issue is resolved.
Other browsers are available that function properly, for example: FireFox, Opera, Safari, or Chrome.

And sure enough, IE11 never hooks up on my newly-upgraded Win 8.1 box. I don't see the classic "compatibility view" icon anywhere near the address bar, I had to muck about with the gear/tools icon and dropdown window. Also sure enough, Chrome had no problems.

If it's true that "another Microsoft product is causing the problem" is correct, then that's kind of silly. This is my first (and hopefully only :) ) issue with Win8.

    Good reason to dump explorer.

Now, if only Microsoft would dump it, the rest of the world wouldn't need to test with it :)

    Hello!
That portion of the site is related to bird registration (Pilots licenses) and renewal of same, are you one of the lucky ones who has one and indeed spends his time up there Erco? Lucky fellow.

They are supposed to tell you what that product is by the way.

Incidentally I arranged that to happen but only to two people today.

+2. A company with Microsoft's resources really should do better.

A company with Microsoft's resources really should do better.
Windows 95, Windows Vista, Windows 8.01, Windows KB updates that break Aero, IE10 that requires KB update that breaks Aero. I think they are doing enough already.

...funny, I was just reading about Microsoft's test integration and team development packages..wonder if they have tried either of those in house?

I think that's one of those questions that you can't win no matter how you answer!

Even if the MS in my Forum Name just comes from my first and last name, I do use (and work) mostly with Microsoft products. I did jump into other beds but mostly returned to MS because - well - I got the work done I was paid for.

But slowly them are working me down. (@heater will love to hear that)

The project I currently work on started out 1996-1997 in VB4 and VB6 Database was Access. Using w2000 serer beta and asp.net 0.9(?) found in the admin-web-pages on the beta I did set up some web-services (as them would be called later) and some dynamic web sites. Project done I moved on with my life.

Years later I was called into that project again (the EURO was coming). By then it had evolved and was using MS SQL 6 as Database. Well I solved the EU thing and move all the web stuff to early W2003 servers. Project done I moved on with my life.

Now I am stuck. I am back at the project since 2 years(!) again. No way to get VB6 up into the net framework. ALL VB4/6 stuff needs to be written again. Since other legacy stuff needs DBase III the last usable Visual Studio Version was 2008.

And neither IE10 nor IE11 can display Web Pages made with VS 2008 Ajax Support. both fail BIG. And while I and some other Guys still try to get ALL of the systems to (at least) 2008 Microsoft announced that they will now upgrade their update frequency and will deliver now EVERY year a new version for Visual Studio/Office/SQLserver/ReportServer/etc.

I am done. I will never be able to leave this job. I am stuck with constantly rewriting / changing / updating existing systems and fighting the resulting problems. Or hire more programmer and sys-admins.

Sorry to rant here but I am originally a COBOL programmer (you now - once written, runs forever...)

WHY do we need so fast update cycles at all?

    HELP!

    Mike

My Firefox.. which is now actually the Iceweasel is begging for a $3 donation everything I start it up.... seems that people are not thinking much about a preferred browser.

Maybe we should start a donation website that reminds you to make one annual gift that covers all your needy free services. I'd start with Wikipedia, Iceweasel, and Project Gutenberg.

I just will I could get a search engine that actuall searched for information, not for something to sell me.

Integration has never been a strong point at MS... thankfully Bill Gates didn't decide to build airplanes. If he had, we all would have had a lot more to worry about.

LOL, the airplanes were built on UNIX, and before that drafting boards.

Now a days a Windows machine works well, but it took a loooong while for that to be true.

Occasional rants are good, and you make a valid point. The only reason I can see for such fast update cycles is to enhance the bottom line. There is much less money to be made by fixing bugs and enhancing products than there is in releasing "new" software, even when the new software is functionally the same.

Yeah, but know that nearly every medical imaging device from Philips, Siemens, and most other OEMs are using a windows XP or XP64 platform. GE OTOH seems to be sticking with Linux for pretty much all of its medical imaging systems from the big iron down to rad/fluoro (wish someone could have written a decent cron job for system clean up on the definium 5K) rooms. Some low end ultrasound systems may be using windows. Guess which systems I trust for data protection and system reliability?

    FF, CRES

Guess which system you trust for medical care? That seems like a trick question to me, maybe none of the above. GE with Lnux actually seems appealing to me.

Why would Phillips, Siemens, and others go with Windows? [a] XP was pretty good, the doctors don't understand computer OSes anyway.

Many times with those type of devices (medical devices, electronic test equipment, etc.) the OS is locked. It has one job to do only. It doesn't get updated and no one uses it to surf the internet. In many cases, an essentially fresh copy of the OS is loaded every time the machine is re-booted. Software such as Deep Freeze or similar is used.

Win XP support ends next year. Win7 usage is growing faster than Win 8. Son of a gun, it's big fun at Microsoft!
