Just now I wanted to quickly show someone the Propeller manual. Easy you might think.

Go to "parallax.inc", select "microcontrollers" from top, select "Propeller" from the resulting nav bar. There is the propeller page. Where is the frikkin data sheet or manual or any downloads at all?

After much pecking around we find it
1) You have to go to the "shop" on the left.
2) Select "microcontrollers"
3) Select "Propeller"
4) Then "Chips"
5) Then select a likely looking chip
6) Then scroll down to the bottom of the page,
7) Then select "downloads"

Ah, there it is. The long lost Propeller Manual.

Really you could not hide information about the most significant product from Parallax under a bigger flatter rock than that.

Admittedly one can get there a bit quicker by typing "Propeller manual" into the search box but that presupposes a visitor knows what they are looking for. Surely these crucial docs should be more up front?

And by the way what happened to parallaxsemiconductor.com? Seems to have dropped off the net.

Parallax Semiconductor is a tab at that top of your Forum screen... works fine for me.

Maybe... just maybe there should be ONE MORE tab up there for the Propeller Manual.
Have you considered that the documentation inside the Propeller Tool might just link to it?

Nonetheless, I have never been a big fan of webpage revisions... somebody that is doing the writing always seems to miss a few key features or issues of utmost importance.

You might also find the manual more easily at the Parallax LEARN pages... seems an obvious location to encourage readers. Sadly, I can't seem to find it in hte LEARN pages either.

Has documention fallen out of vogue and tutorial take over the hedgemony? Anarcy!

I suppose it depends on what manual is most important to oneself regarding putting links on the webpage, I typed "Manual" into the search bar and got a big list of manuals for lots of the different types of things

At least Parallax did a better job than ACA putting up a website :).

A link to a manuals and other downloads page should be on every product that contains a Propeller (easier now that they have tabs), but consider: the Nav bar is for buying things. Manuals and other downloads are a free resource. On Amazon or any other online site the main shopping links are for shopping. You would not expect, nor would it be helpful, to clutter up shopping links with extraneous support pages.

I think Parallax has it right, though maybe they could add a hint to a main support page in the Resources tab for each Propeller-based product.

    Loopy,

No, why would I? I have not seen a Propeller Tool for years and would not think to download a legacy Windows program just for that.

    Seems www.parallaxsemiconductor.com came back again.
I agree Gordon. Actually I think the whole web site is very nice. I have no problem with the shop nav bar being for buying things and I don't expect the Prop manual or others to be directly linked from the front page. Like you say, as soon as I get to the Propeller intro page then perhaps it's appropriate to link to sources of further information from there. tutorials, manuals etc. A shop is a shop but if your visitors don't know what they want to buy yet you have to pull them in some how.

I was certainly spoiled by the downloads link. Very easy to use for me at least.

What's easy for me may be an eye-roller for someone else, vis-a-vis. The challenge is to make things easy to access and use for everyone.

Moving this thread to the 'Suggestions to Parallax' Forum.

Good suggestion, Gordon. I'll see about getting something like this together.

    BINGO! We have a winner!

Not trying to hurt anyones feelings, but I believe the previous website layout made it much easier to find products and documentation. Defend the current layout if you must, but my opinion won't change.

I think the new site 'looks' really nice, but I agree it is harder to find things.

The 'Shop' menu on the left works pretty well, and each product has links to documents.

The menu at the top seems to be the biggest problem, the product pages should include documentation links, or at least links to the product sales pages that already have those links.

Basically those top menu items are dead ends right now.

I think the first two levels are OK, but it needs more work below that. In a search for the Prop manual I clicked on "Support" and then "Downloads" like I would do on most websites. But then I hit a roadblock where it only listed 4 items, and none of them were the Prop manuals. At this point the webpage should show links for "Software" and "Documents". There is a area to enter a search term, but when I searched for "documents" I got zero hits. Then I search for "manual" and saw the Prop manual in the list.

Our regular Search in the left-hand menu did a pretty good job with 'prop manual'...

    Jen,

I think the point people are trying to make is that if you don't know what to search for, it's more difficult to find than it was with the old site. A list of all downloads, grouped by product, that people can simply browse would enjoy a most-welcome return. Please consider it; it seems to be what your customers want, after all.

Think of it this way: if you went to the library looking for something to read, but didn't know what you wanted, would you go to the card catalog first or browse the shelves for something that catches your eye? The same principle applies to the Parallax website.

I totally understand, Phil. We have a lot on our web wish list and we are a very small team. Thanks to everyone for bearing with us. We appreciate it.

That right there. That's the biggest issue I have with the site.

Yep, as Dave Hein said. I too look for 'Support', then 'Downloads' (unless 'Downloads' isn't already there on the front page). Then 'Software' or 'Documentation' (or similar). I wouldn't search for 'prop manual', it wouldn't have occured to me that the document I needed would be called 'prop manual' or 'propeller manual' (or anything with 'manual'). The only reason I kind of knew was because I've been hanging around on the forum for a few years. So the search button does not help for people looking for downloadable documentation or software. The user needs to be able to see lists which can be used to navigate to the right document etc. (when there's a list it's easy enough to figure out what's what).

Traditionally, wasn't the fundamental difference between Yahoo and Google the mechanism to find things? Yahoo was a tree, and Google a search. It seems like any information host needs to have both.
