As many of you know back in August we had to put down our beloved Red Bone Hound, Ozzy. My wife and I said no more animals but my office was just too lonely. So, 3 weeks ago we purchased another Red Bone puppy. He is 10 weeks old today and thus far he will sit, high five and speak on command. He also has his nose to the ground most of the time and loves his coon I bought for him that is hanging in our tree. He sits under my desk while I work just like our Ozzy did!!!!!!

Yea, I just wish he was as easy to program as my rolling one!!!! So far not so bad though. Although he has some accidents which is to be expected, he does try to make it to the door most times.

Oh, yeah, there is that. 'Something to consider.

When Browser first arrived on my doorstep, he came with a bag of food and a shallow cardboard box lined with a plastic garbage bag filled with enough cat litter for an overnight stay, As the presumptive cat foisters and I sat in my shop discussing little Browser's sojourn, he went over to the box, did his business, gathered up the edges of the plastic bag, and looked at me beseechingly for a twist tie. Okay! That got him a point or two right off the bat.

But dogs have their own advantages, among which are instant bonding, unwavering loyalty, and ability to go places with you without requiring a cat sitter when you're gone.

    Decisions, decisions.

I have always liked the fact that dogs can be trained to do what "you" want. Cats always seem to do what they want at their conveinance. I have had a few of them over the years. My last one was a beutiful calicou that lasted about 7 years until she zigged and should have zagged. One of the better felines I have owned.

I've had both dogs and cats... each is wonderful in its own way. I've outgrown tropical fish and hamsters for many years -- slimy aquariums and stinky cages.

My present mutt is just about the most rewarding pet that I've ever had, ... but he wants to renegotiate everything everyday for his own amusement. So much for 'a good routine' and 'being the leader of the pack'.

Some days, the only way I can get him going in the direction I want to go is to tickle him until he capitualates... calm assertiveness is met with his own calm assertiveness as he lies down and won't budge. Much as I enjoy watching 'The Dog Whisper', Cesar's way seems to not apply.. No master here, we are merely roommates that hangout together.

It is not about training the dog as much as it is about having a pal that never says one word of complaint, can sleep through nearly every crisis, never says "I told you so", and is mostly thinking about what is for lunch.

He sure is cute (good thing for some puppies!)

Sounds like he is doing good for 10 weeks. Ours seemed to take forever to get the hang of going to the door - it's a REAL GOOD thing he's cute!

Yea, I was reading that after 8 weeks old they soak everything up like a sponge so I am trying something different every couple days. He will also sit and wait while I put his food in the dish and waits until I say "go ahead" to eat. All in all I think I picked another good one. I am working on training him to speak when he needs to go outside but that might take some doing!!!!

    Andy,

(you probably know all this already) Make sure you do everything yo can to get him socialized with other people and dogs. We did that with the 18 mo old Golden Retriever we have now and it has made all the difference in the world. Our local Kennel Club has puppy socialization classes (sometimes trainers also host them in conjunction with vets). It's the best! He's great with people and other dogs and strange situations. We also took him to puppy obedience and AKC obedience courses which are good training (for dog and owner) as well as great socialization opportunities. They really soak up an amazing amount of stuff in this early period and the more POSITIVE situations and experiences you can give them, the better older dog you will have.

Enjoy! It's great to have a faithful buddy around the house!

Get one of each, then figure it out heheh. I was starting to wonder if I was going to get another pet after the loss of my last one. Then one day voila! I think that it just kinda happens when the time is right.

Having never been married, I found my soul mate in a dog. The girls are jealous.

Chopper is a real heart-breaker at this stage.

Xanadu... your dog in the photo or the half that I see looks a lot like my dog. Is that a Taiwanese mutt?

Looks like my very first dog.

Erco may be jealous of that cockpit.
