All this depends on the printer. The Canon's don't seem to behave this way, but the Epsons do.
On a CMYK color inkjet, depending on the model and paper setting, black is actually composed of CMY, with only a small amount of K.
If printing lots of stuff with inkjet it pays to either get refillable cartridges, or use a continuous ink supply system. Quality third-party ink is plentiful for the Epsons. I can print page after page for pennies. If a cartridge shows it's out, a 3-second press of the reset button in the cartridge bay makes the printer think it's got all new cartridges.
The printers to stay away from, on a cost and recycles basis, is HP, due to their use of integrated ink carts/print heads. You literally replace the print head when you replace a cartridge.
