ABdrive encoder use

For my pyAB_prj program, I am trying to create a data logging of wheel tics, or how far the bot has traveled from go to stop. I looked at the ABdrive lib and found the command 'drive_getTicsMeasured()', but I am not sure as to how that command should be used, in the correct manner, or how I could use it for the data logging aspect? A nice quick example of how the command is used, would really be appreciated.
