ELEV-8 Pilots! Humanitarian Drone Contest

I have a friend that founded the North Texas Drone Users Group and also helped found the National Drone Users Group Network. He let me know about a contest they are holding called the Drone Social Impact Award. It's pretty cool! The idea is to promote the use of civilian drone technology for the benefit of humanity.

I think this is a great award to help raise awareness for drones as a positive tool instead of invasions of privacy as many fear. I'd love to see our community of ELEV-8 pilots get involved. It would be great to hear what positive change they can make with the ELEV-8.

If you know people you think might be interested, please feel free to share this contest with them.

Oh, and did I mention the prize purse is $5,000?!?

I'm trying to get Nick, Kevin, and Ken involved. If you enter, we'd love to hear about your project and share your story after the contest is over. Who knows, maybe we'll even award our own prizes.

    Sounds like a good way to get positive public exposure for drones. The trouble is that it seems to be for existing projects;
Is this prize for an idea, something already done, or a project in progress?

This is a prize for impacts already achieved. The work can be ongoing, but you will be evaluated on the good that has already been done.

Yeah, but you've got until March 10, 2014 to make a submission, so there's time to make something happen. This sounds like a very cool contest.

My only problem is the $3000 cap they put on this. I guess that leaves out my $18,000 Emergency Post-Nuclear Meltdown First-Responder Haircutting Drone concept. Oh well.

Yes, some achievement must be made before the final submission. Plenty of time left to do some good ;)

I rather like the term "aerobots."

"drone" is an apt term for a quad copter.
Have you ever listened to the noise they make?
    :)

According to Wiki, A Drone is just a UAV so pretty much all RC Planes, Copters, Quads, etc. are in that arena.

Except when "drone" is an ant, bee or wasp. Or a musical sound. Or a heavy metal band.

But I think you are right. A much over used term now.

It looks like the clippers are held on with Scotch tape.... (years in developments, but only seconds to attach the clippers with office tape) :)

    Mr. vanMunch's specialty: AGRObots

    Not good: Misanthrobots

YoYobots (either play the cello or keep coming back to you)

    GoGobots (boots, headbands and paisley)

    HoHobots (Santa or chocolate....or both)

Drone was a great name until the media started calling UAV/UAS drones. Now we should call the multicopters UAS. People now associate anything called drone with surveillance and weaponry.
