    I have used this equipment a number of times over the years, but never gave thought to any kind of royalties...

    Always remember, people patent dirt. Patenting a stick doesn't seem that far off...

    This comes across to me as very tongue-in-cheek like he's poking fun (quite rightly) at the pointlessness of patents in this day and age.

    Some regard their patents as some form of award for ingenuity but in fact, all you have achieved is the right to sue someone who has a similar idea.

    This is excellent English teaching material for Taiwanese students that are studying engineering. The fact that it is real would really challenge their language skills.
