Strange Ice Cube Spike

Might be something similar to solder whiskers, I don't know. I see them pretty frequently but never more than one or two per tray.
The ice cubes weren't completely frozen yet and I had to be quick to get the picture before the spike thing melted. The ice cubes are made from diet cola, which is why they're brown. That obviously has something to do with the spikes, since I've never seen spikes on ice cubes made from water. Just something weird I thought I'd show you.

Reminds me of photos near Antarctica's Mount Erebus, ice volcanoes.
Maybe try adding slight amounts of salt to the soda to see how it affects the growth of the spires.
Of course, we won't be impressed until you provide us some time lapse video.
Actually, it can happen with plain water. Happened several times here.

So I see, very strange. I'd never seen anything like this until I started freezing Diet Rite. I wonder if it has something to do with the automatic defrost, there's a fan in my freezer that's on a lot of the time.
Well, there go my hopes for a research grant...
At least I was right about the fan
