If you live near the northern east coast of the US, you might be able to catch sight of a rocket launch tonight a little before 11:30 PM EDT.

Personally, I haven't seen anything blasting off toward the moon since the Apollo program.

For more info, check it out.

Normally when major space launches are mentioned the first place thought of would be the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, not the Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), Virginia. I have lived in the Tampa Bay area for the last 12 years and when a shuttle launch would happen at night I would try my best to see it, but, alas, I never did see any. Heard their sonic booms when they came back, but never saw them leave.

We saw it here. Skies were crystal clear. The first stage appeared almost road-flare red. I pity all the people who answer 911 this time of night. I bet lots of people around here grabbed their guns, their gold, and their teeth and scrambled for their bunkers.

It's the robotics orbital LADEE spacecraft, destined for a suicide plunge into the moon at the end of its 6-month mission: http://news.yahoo.com/nasa-launches-robotic-explorer-moon-va-032853293.html

Wallops will be back in the spotlight in less than two weeks. The Virginia-based Orbital Sciences will make its first delivery to the International Space Station, using its own Antares rocket and Cygnus capsule. That commercial launch is scheduled for Sept. 17.

Nothing wrong with guns, gold, and certainly teeth!

    Well, I fell asleep....missed it..

When I was growing up in the 60's and 70's in CT, we would watch the Sounding Rockets frequently taking off from Wallop Island. We also had a Nike site that was about 5 miles from our house. Cold War stuff. Luckily we never saw THOSE deployed. They only got rid of the last pieces of the Nikes' about 8 years ago. The missiles where gone for a long time, but the buildings still existed.

Q: What has an IQ of 150 and a full set of teeth?

A: The front row of spectators at a NASCAR race!

Saw it from Moody Beach, ME! Got to see the second stage burnout, the silent coast and 3rd stage ignition, and flashes from the dropped 2nd stage. This was the first launch I've ever witnessed! Wish I could have been closer!

Trying to spread the love around. If I offend everyone equally, I'm more politically correct.

Q: How do I get away from an angry NASCAR fan who didn't like my joke?

    A: I turn right!

More related, I witlessed (sic) several shuttle launches when I lived in West Palm Beach. One close up, and many from afar. Awesome.

That's easy. You pull your pink Hello Kitty AK-47 out of your mauve man-purse and talk with an Austrian accent.
