From the article: "We all know that football and basketball coaches make ridiculously high salaries, but I never thought of them as the highest-paid public employees."

Guess it depends on one's perspective.

I always thought it looked like a pig ... from the snout in New England, to the feet in Florida and Texas, and to the tail in Alaska.

I was starting to think seriously about this whole topic when they interrupted ESPN SportsCenter for some breaking news about the "Royal Baby" which I had to watch.

Don't worry, GCHQ has it's eyes on me. They are very good buddies with their yankee counterparts.

We glorify a bunch of grown men chasing a ball around a field. And feel sorry for the "poor nerd" who actually invents things that help mankind.
The students that play sports get all the glory and a full scholarship, and the nerd that wins the science fair gets made fun of, and a $50 savings bond.
Gee, I wonder why US schools have such terrible test scores ???

    So true

At least FIRST gives us geeks a sporting chance .
I am happy to say there is not a single jock any where at Oregon tech in wilsonville .
( I can't tell you how pleased I am to not have to deal with " it " ).
only sport here is Ping Pong. and the Wii golf I installed last month .

It would please me to no end to NEVER have competition sports in college again ..

    ..

At least I know ...... some doc not a jock. is gonna cure cancer ...... I can rest easy at night knowing this .

Perhaps it's Darwinism in action. Expensive, maybe. But.... oh wait - that theory would only work if it knocked out their gametes and not just their brains. ...Nevermind.

It's the same here, It seems that celebrity is more important than intelligence in society these days, perhaps it's the dream of being like them that's so important? To be able to earn such amounts of money for relatively little effort or talent, as said elsewhere it depends on your perspective and what is important to oneself.

I think on the average the salaries of Docs will be higher than those of the Jocks. The map only indicates the single highest paid doc or jock in each state, which is usually a head coach of a university football or basketball program. That's no surprise here in Austin where Mack Brown is the highest paid college football coach in the nation. He's probably the highest paid individual of anybody represented on that map. The only surprising thing is that he's still the head coach at the University of Texas.

I've seen this map before, and it doesn't worry me much. Top-earning public employes have always earned far less than the top earners in the private sector. Meanwhile, successful coaches bring in far more money to their schools than they are paid. Supply and demand.

If I were to list the most vexing problems in the US, it certainly wouldn't be some specious Jocks vs. Docs disparity.

    User Name,
...successful coaches bring in far more money to their schools than they are paid...
Except according to the article http://deadspin.com/infographic-is-your-states-highest-paid-employee-a-co-489635228

claims this money does not make it to the schools for any useful purpose.

Ya, Washington state does have a little curly on it and fills the pig picture nicely.
Alaska's Aleutian chain looks more like a dog or cat tail. I once lived in Adak for 6 months ... buuuuurrrr.

I've heard that for decades, but for decades I've also seen reports that seem to suggest the contrary.
Here's a recent one, for example:
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2013/05/07/ncaa-finances-subsidies/2142443/

Generally speaking, it makes me wonder what the purpose of school functions should be. If school functions are all about bringing money into the schools, then couldn't you justify farming out the cheerleaders to work on cruise ships and Vegas night clubs? Sure, the kids might learn a thang or two while pulling in some big bucks for the school, but.... is that really the point of an educational institution?

I must admit that the thought did cross my mind when they quite clearly dropped three large towers in NY and blamed it on some foreign chappies but then invaded the country of some completely different foreign chappies for revenge(!!!)

I think the Universities will argue that strong athletic programs and winning teams are necessary to keep alumni donations pouring in. I don't believe that, though, since it doesn't seem to be keeping tuition costs down.

What I find more depressing are all the neat YouTube videos I find with a few hundred to a few thousand views, while some knucklehead trying to swallow a tablespoon of cinnamon, or lick an electric fly swatter gets several hundred thousand views. The former videos usually take skill while the latter stupidity.

It doesn't stop me from chuckling at the knucklehead when their eyes nearly pop out of their head, but I do feel a little guilty being a part of it.

You shouldn't be so hard on Darwin Award contenders, Martin. Any one of those "knucklehead" videos may be the last one they ever make.
