Help with Parallax Bluetooth RN42

I'm using the Parallax RN42 Bluetooth, connected to my Propeller, using the 3.3V, GND, Rx and Tx lines.

I'm trying to pair it with my PC, running Win7-64.

I am able to pair it OK, by using the Pin 1234, so it shows up in my Devices and Printer window as "RN42-C0BD".

The problem is, that when I paired it, it never assigned COM ports to the device.

When I select "Change Bluetooth settings" from the Control Panel and click on the COM Ports tab, it doesn't show this device.

I need a COM Port assigned so I can test it with the PST.

Any help you can give will be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Jim

    Hi!
I don't have this module. But you have to select the SPP (Serial Port Profile).

How do you select the SPP. It doesn't show up under the services tab of my Properties window.

Can you help me find it? Or is there something else wrong?

    Thanks,

    Jim

What do you have on the PC. A Bluetooth-Dongle ? Which one ? Is there a software ?

I have an MSC motherboard with built-in Bluetooth.

The Device Manager lists: Generic Bluetooth Adapter and Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.

What other info do I need?

    Thanks,

    Jim

As dnalor implies, you have to have a Bluetooth driver on your PC that supports SPP as most do these days. Is Bluetooth built into your PC or do you have a Bluetooth dongle? If the latter, you may have to re-install the software that came with it or download and install a current version from the manufacturer's website.

Edit: Since your Bluetooth is built into your motherboard, you'll have to contact the motherboard's manufacturer to ask about a current Bluetooth driver that supports SPP. With the proper driver installed, when the RN42 shows up as a Bluetooth device, a COM port will be created automatically.

Thanks so much for all of your great answers!

It looks like my best bet may be to get s USB Bluetooth dongle and configure it.

That way I'll know exactly what I have.

    Thanks again.

Outside of the fact that I can't spell, it's much better.

I said it was an MSC motherboard, it's really an MSI motherboard.

After all your suggestions, I re-installed the board Bluetooth drivers.

I had to do it twice. The first time it said it worked, but nothing changed.

When I updated the drivers again, it installed a bunch of Bluetooth stuff.

When I deleted and paired the RN42 again, it came up as port 7 with an SPP driver.

Now I have port 7 with one PST and another PST for the board serial output.

I have a little program that inputs from port 7 and outputs the hex value of what it sees to the serial port.

    It works perfectly.

Thanks for all your usual great help!
