Any experience with automotive RFIDs?

Does anyone have any experience with interfacing the BS2 (or prop) with RFID receivers and active tags that are more for automotive systems? A lot of the chips for tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) look particularly attractive, as they are a good fit for a particular application I'm interested in...specifically received signal strength indicator (RSSI), a power-down mode with really low power consumption, and a wakeup function when a transmitted preamble matches what the receiver is programmed to listen for. I'd be using an active RFID in conjunction with this (chip recommendations for the active RFID Tx are appreciated too!) One of the chips that looks attractive for the receiver is the ATA5282:

The AS3932 and AS3930 look like viable options as well. I'm mainly interested in knowing if these chips are easily interfaced with basic stamps (or propellers or arduinos or whatever), and how the communications protocols work. The datasheets mention that a Manchester protocol is often used.

Any advice, suggestions, code examples, or wisdom is appreciated!
