Oscope

Hello All,

I once asked about the best O'scope to buy on this Forum about 6 mths ago. I was directed to EEBLOG to look and read about the Owon SDS7102. I've been monitoring the chatter and it's mixed. The Scope appears to have Hardware and Firmware issues that the Company is SSSSLLOOOOWWWW to fix or address. This Blog has 100 pages/ 2 years of comments. I'm dealing with this same sort of issue with my Business Software(Same results)....Remember "BUY CHEAP BUY TWICE". That Software was OK for the first two(2) years, but I should of bit the bullet and bought QuickBooks(premier). I'm 99% sure I will buy either the Rigal DS2072 or DS2102A. Not many comments about the DS2102 but lots of comments about the DS2072(minor bugs and probe).

If anyone has any choose or preference, then please comment.

PS:Chris Savage, I just rechecked those resistor SIP's and they are "BUSS" NOT "ISOLATED" like I was suppose to order.....OOP'S, my bad, just reordered new parts.
Thanks for the help.

Howard

The Rigol series are pretty good and decent. I have a DS1052 and it works pretty well and good for me. :)

    Thanks John A. Zoidberg,

I'm trying to decide between the 70 or 100 mhz version.

Buy a cheap scope, like the propscope initally, and if you find you need a high end one, then you have both. I use the propscope when I am not sure of doing damage, or if the damage risk is high.
The propscope's parts are so minimal, and available, that you could repair it yourself, if needed. The firmware is downloaded from the propscope software at runtime everytime.
The schematics are available, so is the binary copy for firmware, there was mention of releasing more info on the protocol or communication scheme, so others could develop their own pc side software, but that has stalled, no one has yet released the info about the firmware and its communication information. IF you wanted YOU could actually re-write your own firmware for the propscope in spin/propasm.. I think people underestimate the power of this affordable scope.

I own a propscope, and have used many other scopes in line of work, and most of what I have used those pro (10k+$ scopes) for was able to be done with the propscope.
The only issue is portability, but the development of an android app for use on tablet isn't impossible, and is something I want to have.

Someone might just end up re-writing the propscope firmware because no one is responding to many peoples requests for communication information though.

I had one of those scope for a trial and did not like it, maybe just me. I'm now looking at the Instek ds2102A also.

    Thanks

Oscilloscopes are a lot like hard drives, don't buy more than you currently need. By the time you actually use up what you have, you'll be able to get twice as much at half the cost.

@Clockloop, I believe the reason no communication protocol was ever released was probably because Hanno Sander used much of the same code as he used for ViewPort. To release to protocol would give someone an inside glimpse and take this information and reverse engineer ViewPort.

OBC on his site PropellerPowered started a project called OpenScope in hopes of a group of Propeller programmers would develop some new open source software. It has basically stalled out. I'm one of the developers on the project so I'll give myself a kick in the pants to get going on it :). So far I've modified the open source Logic Probe program I found on the forums to read the Propscope's A/D. I now need to take the analog sampling to a PC for analysis.

I used lots of tricks to make the PropScope as powerful as possible while minimizing hardware cost. The firmware just samples the data into its memory (not even in the right order) and leaves the majority of processing to be done on the PC. From the beginning of my discussions with Parallax I insisted that the PropScope be a powerful multi-function device instead of an open-source platform that hobbyists could tinker with. That decision determined both the business arrangement and the software. Since PropScope has been one of Parallax’s best-selling products in the last couple years I think it was the right decision. <rant>It would sell even better if it were in stock so that people like mhlittle59 could buy it</rant>. I did offer to write an alternative firmware that would suit the open-source community: fully documented, easy to understand, and easily extensible. However, this is my business and I can’t afford to work for free…

The MSO 19 has a lot of bang for the buck and can easily be carried in a laptop bag..

Hanno, Thanks for the clarification. BTW I believe OBC's Propeller Powered Online store has a couple of PropScopes for sale.

    Hello All,

Just a note: I looked at way to many videos or maybe not enough. But I've decided on the Rigol 2072 scope. The You Tube video's and EEblog.com feedback help to seal the deal. The 3 were (1) Owon....2) Rigol....3) GW Instek 2102A). ($800.00 to $1200.00) range.
Thanks for all the help and leading me to EEblog to ck out the reviews first.
