I could be a poster child for how NOT to do it!!

Yeah, this don't work so well.........

Storage-1.jpg

There are 3 locations like this in the house: office(shown), basement storage shelves and basement workbench (pictures to follow)

Um, it's not very effective for cameras, either.

That's pretty good. I have ONE mess, that goes from the basement work benches, and flows to the upstairs work areas. Cleaning is on the list, just not at the top yet.

Rick... Thanks for posting this - I've been cleaning up my work space. It has been a mess since we moved to a new house.

Maybe we could start a group...

    You are welcome too, prof...

In the true spirit of entropy, it should probably be a DE-motivational group?

I'd recognize those ebay China shipping envelopes anywhere! Looks a lot like my bench...

Yes, that is my "living room".

You can always hire a general contractor or an architect to design custom storage and work space to solve the problem.

But the truth is you will likey just have custom storage and a custom work space along with the mess. In high school I dated a girl whose father was an archtect and he designed and built both in his own home to do away with the mess, but he still had the problem.

My experience as a general contractor was that the people that wanted these things to make the mess go away never succeeded.

Life is inherently messy. The choice between small messes and big ones is personal.

Very true, Loopy. And in general, creativity is a messy business. When someone's office is spotless and tidy, I wonder how much work they actually achieve in a day.

BTW, thanks for the fun thread, el Rico. A fairly high ratio of replies to views here. :)

..and with you being only 199 away, I try to offer opportunities for a high reply to view ratio.

...um, I'm not very productive, either! (exception to every rule thing!!)

@RDL2004: Your contribution to this thread isn't very helpful.

It appears you may actually be able to find things you are looking for and proceed with productive work! That seems a bit of topic here!!

(Seriously, your arrangement looks great. My goals are something like that in the basement. I'm allowed a tablet or maybe a laptop in the living spaces....if 'm lucky!)

I managed my mess and storage problem by renting a 400 ft2 industrial bay as an electronics development and motorcycle maintenance area as well as the operating base for a small business quantifying and certifying fuel injectors. I share it with my adult son and it's worth every nickel. When I'm there there's no interruptions, etc., and it makes it easier to keep it somewhat organized for some reason. The increase in marital harmony is a huge plus as well as when I'm home, I'm home:-).

...and more importantly for both parties, when you're NOT, you're NOT! :innocent:

Thanks for the interesting comment, but it sounds like a good solution to several problems and is therefore off topic. Some of you guys really have trouble concentrating and contributing effectively!

    Jim,

I'll post more, if you post some.

At my age, I'm no longer embarrassed!!! It is what it is, love me or leave me!

I'll think about it. I'll have to clean up the mess so it doesn't look so messy. :)

What's with the new avatar? I liked the marble. :)

Publison I think Rick is looking a lot like Ken lately! I don't call it a mess, it is always a work in progress.

@RDL2004 What is that fuzzy biege stuff in the lower right of your pictures? I don't think I've seen that anywhere around my place. Is it white moss or something?

I don't know, but it's been in every apartment I've lived in for the last 20 years., and it's always the same boring beige color. Nice to walk on though.

I am hoping before the end of the summer to find out!!! I have quite a major Office/Work Space renovation planned. It has been a few years since I have even moved my huge Server rack to clean behind it. I will take some pics and post them once I find out if anything is growing back there yet.

What is really scary is that the people with spotless and tidy offices or workspaces actually know how to get someone else to do all the creative work for them while they reap the benefits.
