The guy who made the Printbot and Printrbot Jr now has a new 3D printer called the Printrbot Simple http://printrbot.com/shop/printrbot-simple/. The print volume is small at roughly the size of a Rubik's cube, but he has some interesting ideas like using Kevlar fishing line for belts. While it's simple and a bit of a kludge, if you've ever wound a cord around a dowel the power of friction can be amazing.
Looking at it I wonder how rigid the frame is during front to back motion. The extruder has mechanical advantage and he's using zip ties to hold the rods in place, so I can envision some up and down flexing.
