Hello!
Whilst visiting the blog of a chap who normally works with the Arduino for the purposes of teaching it to do the impossible, he states that the thing he wrote about also works with the 38kHZ Infrared Receiver described here: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049727 .Well when I started looking at the reviewers to see what they thought about it, I saw one with the legend of Erco attached. And let's just say he gave them a good thrashing.
Oh and the blog for the chap: http://www.righto.com/2009/08/multi-protocol-infrared-remote-library.html good enough on the subject.

And you were right to alert potential buyers! I remember that alert this, (or last), year.
I bought the last metal frame off the rack last year. Now I use:

Great choice, per http://www.robotroom.com/PNA4602M-Replacement-1.html
(And you'll find another correction from me and my big mouth on that page, too. I just can't keep my opinions to myself!)
323 to go...
317 to go. BOOM!
