I figure that most of the guys and gals here likes BIG BOOMS?

Yes, the target was still floating afterwards, but considering that all internal doors and bulkheads had been welded shut, oils and fuel and pretty much anything that could explode or catch fire had been removed...
I doubt any modern corvette would be usable after a strike like that. Most cruisers would be hard put to be of much use afterwards, also.

They're being fitted on our Skjold(shield) class Coastal Corvettes.

(The article is wrong on one point, though. MTB is an acronym for Missile Torpedo Boat... )

I thought that MTB was Motor Torpedo Boat.

The hit was much more quiet than Hollywood would have me believe.

The Norwegian Navy changed the definition for their boats back in the 70s when they started equipping them with the Penguin missile.
If any other navy still uses 'Motor Toerpedo Boat', they're probably using antique equipment also.

They probably didn't have the proper audio equipment or even interest in recording the sound properly, so no Hollywoodesque sound.
Also the lack of fuels on board results in the lack of flames also associated with a typical Hollywood explosion.

Watching ships being blown up just makes me sick. And by our own Norwegian forces as well. 3700 civilian Norwegian sailors lost their lives during WW II, and 473 Norwegian ships (only counting those not sailing at home). That was torpedoing, missiles aren't any better. In a conflict this kind of tech will be used just as in WW II, killing civilians. Those who survive survive as utter wrecks.

No, BOOM isn't fun, and BOOM isn't enjoyable. BOOM is disgusting.

In 1970 I had the amazing experience of visiting the USS America while she was parked in Sydney for three days. Even got an awesome ride on the elevator that brings planes up and down from below deck.

I was most upset to learn she ended her life being used for target practice in 2005.

As for things going BOOM. No body want's to war of course but it happens and we had better be able to defend ourselves.

That was disturbing. America wasn't that a great of a ship. It was cobbled together with spare parts from building the great CVN-65. At least target practice was "useful".

I served in the Navy 1974-1980, and we refueled off the America several times, as well as refueled as she was taking fuel on the other side of the oiler.

Of course, we don't like to use missiles and bombs(even if our soldiers are pretty good at it), so...

    We have 'soft' solutions, too.

Here's some surveillance footage of a team of attack-sheep in action that some b**tards have leaked onto YouTube...

    JLocke,

That must be the elevator I rode on aged 12. Do seadogs call that an elevator? I can't believe we got in there, does the US Navy allow tourists on board now a days?

I'm keeping that picture. Got anymore like that?
